Bugger!
had me storm booked in for its 25,000 mile serivce next week & cos i dont have any history of cct change i thought id get some new ones put in at the same time, alas, twas wishfull thinking as they went pop last night!
hopefully i might have cought them before major damage took place, theres a horrible sound coming from the front (rattly noise) but it does fire on both pots still. If i had done a bit of valve slapping would the rear wheel lock up? cos the bikes in the garage now but its the waiting to find out how much damage thats killing me :x & to make it worse looked outside window thismorning to be greeted with dry roads!!! first dry roads since i got the storm & its bloody broken!!!!!

That's very annoying.

I am picking my storm up a week on sat, and all this talk about CCTs is making me worried.

Just how big an issue is it?

I read on the superhawk forum someone say as long as you change them every 15k miles they will bo ok, also read about the manual adjustable ones.

This is a very annoying issue, as i am sure it is for owners who have had theirs break.

Is this issue slightly amplified because of the forum.

I wonder if they are people on th eforum who have never had this problem and what mileage they have done!!!
It's here.........

Just changed mine at 36,000 kms, not sure on miles. They make a bit of a strange noise when they're worn. Like high pitched chain slap, usually only on overrun. I've heard of people not having a problem until 70,000km and others going at 25,000, so it seems like it depends on your bike. Just keep an ear out for a strange noise and then get it checked out.

:(
Sorry to hear about your woes,
If it is any consolation mine went too on Monday while in Devon 200 miles from home. Timing chain has jumped the teeth and mullered the valves. The bike is currently sat in pieces at my friends farm in Somerset while i finish walking around kicking things deciding what to do. Priced up the parts and it is not cheap to repair (valves costing £30 each). Honestly though about cutting my losses and just buying a new shiney bike but realised that I like the firestorm and there are no other twins i would like as a replacement. (plus i can't afford a new one).
I use my bike every day and have a full service history with the tensioner replaces not too long ago but it is horrible when it happens.
Hope it gets fixed soon,
Burt

Sorry to hear about that :( this is bad scenario - but at least you were in home country....

Just a quick question (statistics) if I may? What year's your bike and how long ago did you replace CCT and what color dot that CCT had (if you happen to recall)?

I didn't change mine until about 75,000kms (46,875 miles). I got plenty of warning with the knocking sound. Sorry others haven't been so lucky :( .
If you ate yourself would you become twice as big or simply disappear?

My front went at 37,000 miles and caused a lot of damage. I'm going to change them regularly now (prob every 10,000 miles).

The most annoying think is there is no service interval for checking or changing these.

The bike is a 1999 T reg bike. Rear CCT changed about 4,000 miles ago Front one seemed fine at the time so didn't replace it. Full service 6,000 ago. Don't know when the front was changed but I have only had the bike for 6,000.
Was riding along at a sensible 45mph, no tapping or funny sounds (which I am constantly looking for, to the point of neuroticism) then, under no excessive load, there was a odd sound (sounded like a piece of fairing had fallen and got caught against the wheel). I put the clutch in straight away and coasted to a stop, no locking up, just freewheeled. When I stopped I tried to start it very briefly to hear the noise close up and it made a 'CLACKITY CLACKITY CLACKITY' enough to hear it was coming from the front and then waited for Mr Recovery chap.
Took the rocker cover off to see the Timing chain was not sitting on the teeth and that the valves were not where they should be supposed to be.
Honda valves are £30 ea and there are 4 per head. New chain is £75 and tensioner £35 so it all adds up (especially when you add labour oh, and VAT).
It is a pain but I think I may just get them replaced at every service just to be safe.
Still I'm sure I'll enjoy the tube journey to work each day for the few weeks, may make some friends instead of annoying people in their cars as I whizz pass them up to the front of the queue while not having to pay the congestion charge.......mmmm, think i'm missing the bike already.
