Throttle Position Sensor
Throttle Position Sensor
Hey everyone, has any one had to replace the Throttle Position Sensor on their 'Hawk? Any idea how to get the old one off. I've got a yellow '98 Hawk with Factory advancer, Dynojet kit, HMF slip/on's and K&N filter. I have the carbs synced, I dynoed the bike, the idle just seemed to wander between 1000 and 1500, sometimes it stalls. Any suggestions?

Check the fittings for the choke cables, where they enter the carb bodies.
During a carb balancing a couple of months ago I *think* one got broke. I was plauged with a hunting idle. This week I did the DynoJet kit and K&N filter stuff, and the second one broke. My bike wouldn't even idle enough to re-balance the carbs. The small black fitting that screws into the carb body is what broke. After talking to the local Honda shop they say this happens all the time. The bad news is you can't buy the fitting by itself, you have to buy the whole choke cable.
good luck.

You know the Austin Powers movies? I have always wanted to date someone like Allota Fagina... but I always seem to date her sister Sandy.

TPS
you can test the TPS, see you manual. it's just a variable resistor.
Never had one break (choke think with 10mm nut shape thing on it) in me life and on one of my VTR's they were taken off at least 20+ times. Must be those garage monkeys over tightening them. Check it out still. You should be able to see em with a torch and see if it has snapped.
You've had em balance but have the pilot air screws been adjusted or checked because this could easily cause the problems you have described.
Also did it run ok on the dyno?
The static advancers don't help the tick over either, try setting the idle at 1300rpm and do the adjustment there.

Throttle Position Sensor
The bike did the same on the dyno, about 115hp. In the manual theres a test for the TPS, unplug the connector, rev the bike and hold it at 3500 rpm, plug in the TPS connector the idle should increase. My idle stayed at 3500. Its gotta be the sensor, I will check the choke cableling though.
TPS
There's also tests for the TPS sensor where you measure the resistance at closed and full throttle, try doing that and then also check the measurements at the other end of the cable at the ECU before ya splash out on a new en. That test in the manual with the idle always seems abit dodgy, tried it loads of times and doesn't seem to alter it much at all. You need a digital tacho really that goes to 10rpm to see any change. A good way it to raise the revs is using the idle screw because your hand tends to move on the throttle slightly.
Did you try your pilot air screws and check for intake leaks.

Another Question
Just thought, has the above problem started since you added the K&N, jet kit advancer etc or did it just start idling bad?

This problem just started all of a sudden. I'm going to check the TPS with a multimeter like you suggest.
