Firestorm frame

Post by adstar »

hey everyone.

Just go back from the Nurburgring with a little damage to my storm :(

Basically I lowsided at about 30 mph and caused little damage to the right side of the bike. Having got the bike back to the car park it was all looking like reasonably minor cosmetic damage until someone noticed that the frame had cracked.

Basically the front sub-frame had bent and the mouning lug has been pulled out.

Does anyone have

a firestorm frame (and V5) or no where/how much I could get one
right engine cover
right fairing panel
front/top fairing cowl
right exhaust can

I am browsing ebay as I speak but any help/recommendations would be great.

Will post some pics later.

Thanks,

Adam

Sorry to hear that mate, I hope it was at the end of the weekend so you didn't miss out too much!!

WRT repairs, if its just the lug where the mirror and speedo mount bolts on, your best bet is to get a new lug welded on (saves a lot of hassle stripping the bike to replace the frame)
Alternatively there was a trackday VTR for sale on here recently. Even if its got no V5 it is perfectly legal and accepted to get the old numbers crossed out and your original ones stamped back onto the new frame

Engine covers - if the crashed one isn't broken/ leaking, consider a set of carbon engine covers. These go over the top, hide the marks and are a lot more sturdy than the standard ones

Can't help with the other bits though, sorry

Ben
PS where did you drop it, I can't think of ANY 30mph right handers on the 'ring

Well it may have been slightly faster than 30 mph but can't have been that fast. It was going into the S bends fairly eraly on at about 2kms.

I really am not sure what to do with the bike. As you can see from the pics (especially the last) the crack is in the headstock of the main frame.

I'm not really sure I can be bothered to track down a frame (although there is one on ebay at the mo) and change it all over.

Currently my preference is to sell the bike whole as it is (there is lots of it in excellent condition) - would hope to get ~£900.

Back up option is to break the bike and sell the parts. which will probably make more.

Any suggestions? Takers? Advice?

Just showed the pics to a guy at work who knows these things and he reckons a decent TIG welder could sort that no problem

All the load a headstock has to deal with is on the bottom race which transmits it directly to the frame rails
The bit you've broken just keeps the top bearings (support for the bars etc) in line.
Don't forget that the SP1, new R6 etc all have the ram air going throught the headstock so its not under much load.

You'll need to strip the front end but its a hell of a lot easier than swapping the frame

I guess I would not be confident with it just repaired - it probably is possible but I'm not sure I want the hassle...

Think I might put it on ebay and see if anyone wants to take it off me cheaply to repair.
