Questions before buying a Storm

Post by OB »

Hello, virtual drinks all round, served in novelty mugs with bendy straws.

I am thinking about buying a Firestorm in the very near future and had a few questions, if you don't mind:

Post-2001 the petrol tank was expanded, right?
What is the post-01 tank range, roughly?

Does the firestorm make a decent city bike? Is the turning circle good, and is it OK at low-speed?

I get the feeling from here that the CCTs are a known problem - are they?

Are there any known issues with the Storm that I should look out for when buying?

Are Silver ones the best?

What aftermarket cans sound the most obnoxious?

Has anyone ridden with Pirelli Diablo Stradas, or Diablos (NOT Corsas!) on a Storm - what did you think?

Thanks. :)

I knew a motorcycle courier who used one in Brisbane & now Sydney (a scizophrenic moron, but a Storm-rider, none-the-less). He reckons it was the ants pants, bees knees & dogs danglies for couriering, so I guess that's a good recommendation for what you're after.

I don't have a car, so my Storm is my commuter as well as traveller. I do a couple of long-distance trips a year where I do approx 1000km in a day & can hop off ready to party. No problems there. Last time I clocked up 5,000 in two weeks. Ahhhhh, the memories.

Fuel range is crap, but it's worth it. 2001 has the bigger tank size. Went from 16-18 litres.

I didn't have any CCT probs until about 70,000kms & then there was a lot of warning. Everyone's got a different story, but because there's so little wrong with the beast, it tends to be a bit exaggerated IMO.

I've got an earlier model yellow, but hide a secret yearning for a silver one, or the gloss black with red decals... If you're buying second-hand (which I think is your only option over there), then forget the colour & look at the tidiness & mileage, etc.

I've been running the Pilot Power tyres and have been completely chuffed with them, wet or dry, but last change they were out of stock & I was getting a tad desperate, so I let them talk me into the new Dunlop Qualifiers. Very similar feel to the Powers and a few bucks cheaper, so I'm happy.

Bottom line, every single person here will guarantee you won't be disappointed if you go ahead with it. They're brilliant.
If you ate yourself would you become twice as big or simply disappear?

What is the post-01 tank range, roughly?most of us get on average 100 miles before the RLOD ummmm Im getting 173kms on the 16ltr tank PRE 01 teal model

Does the firestorm make a decent city bike? Is the turning circle good, and is it OK at low-speed?low speed is much better on the storm than it is on a mille for example... I personally find it's turning circle fine... but i'm only a woman.. so what do I know! lol hmmmmmm SPORT/TOURER, ride it however you want....
age old problem here i'm afraid... they are a common problem.. but don't let it rule your decision.. sometimes they go.. sometimes they don't. mine did!!!!

Are there any known issues with the Storm that I should look out for when buying?suspension tends to be quite soft:brakes are good but not fantastic. a lot of buyers usually tend to upgrade the rear shock, forks and brakes true

Are Silver ones the best?NO NO NO NO NO... YELLOW ONES ARE Fu@k!! TEAL is best (who really cares?) What aftermarket cans sound the most obnoxious?obnoxious as in bloody loud? the ART cans on my old storm where much louder than my Yoshimuras are on my newer one any! whatever you can afford!!

Has anyone ridden with Pirelli Diablo Stradas, or Diablos (NOT Corsas!) on a Storm - what did you think? errr no! lolyes, pirelli is good to me, however i think there is better rubber out there....

Thanks. :)
