Running Problems At Higher Rev's

Post by CountryBoy »

New member to this forum but not new to Storms

I,ve got a problem with the storm when it hits about 6.5 / 7 thou on the rev's, it starts to splutter and struggles to accellerate any more, drop below this point and its fine , feels like a missfire or fuel starvation. Its just come back out of storage from the winter and had the cam chain tensioners done just before going into storage, whilst in storage it was run once a week but only on tick over, its got remus race pipes fitted and has had for a couple of years with no problems, any ideas??.

I'd be thinking poor fuel or condesation in the fuel if it's been in storage.
Get yourself a little pipe and stick it on the drain taps on the carbs and drain the fuel. See if any muck or water comes out with the petrol before you start pulling too much apart.

Also, make sure you're spark plug leads are in good nick and all the connections are clean and sound.
Sounds like it might have got a bit of water in somewhere possibly
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

If you had the tank off to do the cct's check you havnt swapped the fuel hoses around.

I had trouble with a coil breaking down, which made the bike run rough, but it was all thru the rev range not just high revs.... bike shop couldnt find fault untill they got a doner bike and swaped parts around took about a month to sort, everything i need for the bike seems to take 3 weeks from Japan, dont seem to hold parts in stock, bit pissy really :!: :!:

Welcome aboard CountryBoy :!: :D

When you had the CCT's replaced did you have it done as a routine service item or did one let go :?:

Cleaning carb jets

Post by CountryBoy »

Thanks for all the advice i appreciate it, another couple of suggestions made has been check the jets arn't blocked in the carbs and check the timing is ok.

Firstly if the timing was out would'nt it run rough throughout the rev range, the problem only occurs from 6.5 thou and up.

And second how to you check the jets? , do you have to remove the carbs?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Had exactly the same problem last season.

Do you smell petrol? If so check the diaphram in the fuel tap.

Mine had a small split and this affected the vacum and the amount of fuel delivered to the carbs.

The reason I asked if you just changed the CCT's as routine maintenance and not because one let go was quite simply one of our members had a miss fire similar to yours after a CCT let go :!: I can't remember what the out come was but I think he did eventually get it sorted.

I don't think he'll mind if you PM him, he is 'Stratman'

Chris.

PS. I've replied to your email :!:

I have no helpful advice (as usual), but just wanted to say your avatar is the best looking colour-scheme Cowasockie has ever come up with!
