Noisy Tappets?

Post by baldzone »

Sold an old Honda CB1 (400cc import) after getting it for a good price and after sending it on to a mate at 'mates rates.'

Trouble is within a couple of days of him having it loud tapping sounds have started.

Knowing the bike was OK after an extensive test ride and he says he hasn't touched anything I'm wondering what this could be. He says it's getting worse.

Tappets need adjusting? Looking at the manual it doesn't have a cam chain but is driven off gears so not a CCT.

Haven't heard it myself yet but will be seeing the bike on Thursday for a bit of diagnosis.

What would cause this so soon? Oil level and coolant is fine.

A valve loose in its seat ?... worn camshaft?... piston rings? ..big ends?..
jings the list of possibilities..seems endless..and if its not readily aparent..looks like a strip and rebuild? :(

If you've sold it that's an end to it surely? But, that's why I NEVER sell anything to anyone I know because the curse of Tutenkamen follows - it is destined to go wrong and make me feel guilty!

LOL!!

It's sounding like teh previous owner had the exhaust off and adjusted the valve clearances so will be looking at both those items tomorrow. Heard a rumor that some of the noise could be from a leaky exhaust manifold so am going to get some new seals and asjust the tappets. He's also having troubles with the charging system now. Damned HONDA r/r's!!
