Non-firestorm advice KLR 250 Crosser!

Post by Squiffythewombat »

Hi Guys,

Restoring an old KLR250 to help fund my engine replacement and mods. Almost finnished however a new problem has occured:

She starts fine (with choke) but if you quickly open the throttle dies and you have to "coax" her into reving high. Once the engine is warm then the problem isnt so bad, its still there but not so noticable!

My first thoughts were blocked jets as the bikes been standing for ages? was just after an opinion before i waste my time striping the carb etc.

Its a 4S by the way not a 2T

Thanks in Advance
Toby

If it's been standing for ages and the carb hadn't been drained the old fuel in it will have more than likely gone off, it may have even congealed in the bottom of the float chamber depending on how old the petrol is :!: It may not be to bad if it's getting better when it's warmed up, try riding it around and see if clears itself first,

Chris.

POO!

Did as you said and took it for a ride, half way through about a mile from home she dies!

Just the classic, move the throttle and nothing happens, hold in clutch and engine doesnt quite die but its hard to keep it going.

Leave her a few mins while some horses trot past... start it and the same thing happens, i mange to ride home using a billion revs and half slipping the clutch in 1st.

Theres no smoke, theres water in the cooling system and everything was working fine before i took the pannels off to respray them! Since then theres been this weird problem!

Im going to leave her for an hour or so then try starting her later see if the problem changes at all!

DOOKIE WHAT A FIND! THATS SOOOO CHEAP OMG!!!!

Ok tried again, from cold.

The bike starts and runs on choke, the second you turn the throttle it dies so really does feel like jets or something, ill stripe the carb off tommorow!

Like i said m8 sounds to me like your pilot jet is blocked , the pilot jet works with the airscrew and the slide cutaway up until around 1/2 throttle and the main jet takes over from there so when this jets blocked it gives the simptoms that you describe.
It runs when you give it loads of throttle because your running mainly on the main jet but lower throttle openings are so week they bog down.
Try it mate its also the smaller of the jets so more likely to get gunged up.

Also to find things like the engine when searching ebay try several different searchies like honda vtr 1000 firestorm and then say honda vtr1000 firestorm , its strange how having a gap between vtr and thousand throws up a lot of different results :D

It looks like you are going to have to strip and clean the carb, once that's done at least you'll know then if it is that or not :!:

while you have the carb in bits check the float height, definately sounds like fuel starvation as on tickover it gets enough when it wants more it cant get it.
have you got a manual?
whats the air filter like, maybe getting starved of air..plug colour?
another thought is have you cleaned the exhaust out? carbon build up

Thanks chaz, pretty sure its the carb but it doesnt really matter as i sold her to a mate last night :-)
