What RPM??

Post by MickieB »

Hey guys and gals,

When you're cruising on your firestorm what is a good rpm to be sitting on? I have an 03 firestorm and i'm finding it misfires at around 2500rpm but not around 3000rpm. But is 3000rpm too high to cruise on?? Never owned motorbike before so i'm still feeling the water.

Hi MickieB
 Welcome Aboard

All I can say about cruisin is its got to be comfy. It revs out to ten thou so pick a speed the engine likes and don't worry about the revs.

5- 6 I'd say! But I do have a larger rear sprocket officer.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

BAH slowmos! Stick it in 5th @ 6 thou and youll "cruise" home quick enough!

Depends really if your talking about a roads, back lanes, motorways.... all of which require a different tack on what speed and RPM you want to sit at!

As strat said though, its whatever speed suits you best, as long as your not thrashing the nuts off it then the engine will go on forever! There is the issue of fuel economy but if you were fussed about that i doubt you would of bought a storm!

incidently, why did you get a storm as your first bike out of intrest?

I chose a storm because i love the sound of the V-twin and because it looks great and rides great.

The thought of cruising at 5-6krpm is crazy, my bike sounds like it's pinging at 3 thou. the areas i'm talking about riding is just around the streets to and from work and such, doing normally 60km/h (I think that's maybe 35mph). What rpm would be the best for fuel economy?? I normally just give it a bit around but i don't have much of a licence left so i need to be careful for a few months so i'm just learning to ride it really slowly.

I reckon zero rpm and walk!

Storms aren't renowned for fuel economy. There is the fact that an engine needs to have some revs to produce maximum efficiency of combustion so around 3,500-4000 is best (if that's your thing!). Carbs this size will never be very good. At least with the small tank it doesn't seem to cost much to fill it up................. you just do it more often!!!!!!

I owned a high performace jap car before this so it seems like incredible fuel economy to me! Yeah i think sitting on about 3000rpm is comfortable for me.

Welcome aboard MickieB :!: :D

I don't think your bike should be misfiring at around 2,500rpm, has it been serviced recently and how many miles has it done :?:

As already said it's a personal thing what rev's you're comfortable with and the road dictates etc, but 3,000rpm is not going to cause any damage :!:

Interesting statistic that shows that the largest increase in speeding appears to be from females. Reason? Scameras don't give a t*ss about how good looking/ how much flesh is on show etc etc so the true picture of speeders becomes better known.
No let-offs there Kaz!!!

Its the sneaky mobile tossers who are doing most of the damage these days.
We seem to have gone from max exposure flourescent yellow Gatso, to sneaky camera vans hidden behind hedges and dips in the road, miles away from any sort of hazard.
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

They have been doing people with one of these mobile scamera vans from a bridge over a section of the M2 in Kent. Now someone has realised that the scamera van is actually parked up on double yellow lines when they do this so someone is going to court I believe to get their speeding fine thrown out. :)

i think you misunderstood me dude - i was joking! 6thou in 5th wont be 35mph, not unless you have a sprocket the size of a dinner plate!

as chris said...

THERE IS NO POINT IN TRYING TO SAVE FUEL ON THE STORM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wish i had a pound for every time this issue came up!

hmmm, read the replies etc,but the one thing that I'm not sure about is the backfiring thing.......you sure its not "chatter" where the rear wheel is trying to turn the engine between power strokes with a bit of chain snatch?..........well I know what I'm on about. Just drop a gear...

Yeah i'm not really fussed about fuel, more worried about engine health. I've been having a lot of trouble with missfires so the bike is going into the shop asap because something must be wrong. I think it's possibly a bad tune but i'm not sure. Someone suggested my timing belt may be slipping as well.. But yeah higher revs definatly helps it to run better.
