Just been balancing the carbs for the first time, using the gauge type. Bit worried when connected them up as the gauges have a green area saying all is ok and other markings suggesting there is something wrong - the indications on the gauges suggest I either have an air leak or the cam timing is out. The timing was spot on a short while ago and before I start stripping things wanted to know if others had seen this on gauges?
Both gauges were indicating the same issue.
The bike runs good apart from the odd stalling - hence the carb balance checking.

ps, thanks to Pete L for the tip on removing the rear vacuum pipe from the tank and not the carb - made it a load easier
I use gauge type ones, All I do is join them both to the same cylinder first to make sure they are reading the same, then join them to separate cylinders and never bother about what the readings say just that they read the same.
Hi did mine yesterday with a CARBTUNE balancer, it uses mercury tubes and is supposed to be very accurate,as with Max i just concentrated on getting them to read the same for both tubes...I had just refitted Micron exausts and changed the jets to 180's.went out today and must say i am well pleased with the results. The bike feels like it could pull a house down, so much torque!!!
Hello mate, don't worry about an air leak if the gauges are reading the same. It is pretty unlikely you have the same leak on both cylinders. Check what the vacuum levels should be and compare it with what your read of the gauges.
Good luck
They were only marginally out of balance - if the gauges both moved equal distance for a given vacuum. Wish I had connected them together as a double check before hand. One lives and learns...
Will check them out later using a syringe as a vacuum source.
