I would recommend getting your standard forks upgraded by Roger Ditchfield ( http://www.revolutionuk.co.uk/ ) for those of you who've not heard of him, he is a Firestorm guru, what he doesn't know about Storm's isn't worth knowing
No I'm not a rep for him, just one of many who has had free advice from him on the phone
I spoke to him in Dec 06 and for £199.99 he will rework the fork internals, fit weight related springs and new oil, that price also includes p&p back to you, all you need to do is pay a courier to get the fork legs to him
I think he has a bit of a soft spot for the big Honda V/twin that's why he's held that same price for many years
Cheers,
Chris.

hmmm ... prices have gone up .... emailed him at the same time as creating this post....now quoting £220 job done.
I would like to send them to him as i know he knows his stuff.....however, this is a lil outa my price range and i cant go without my wheels for 3 days.......
Reckon i got about £200 to spare to do this and have my head bearings replaced.
Was thinking about ordering up some springs and taking my bike to a mate with a garage who would turn it all around in 1 day.
so if anyone has other suggestions please lemme know.....was also considering ohlins springs or racetech.....not sure tho.....help?

FWIW, Roger really is your best bet
The front forks on the VTR1000 are lightly sprung for maximum comfort but then overdamped to control wheel movement
The following quote from Maxton's Ron Williams nicely explains the problems
If you really really cant stretch to a good Rogering, there are a couple of options open to you
Firstly, Fit stiffer springs
Secondly, Change the oil

HOWEVER,VTR1000? We've just done one, last week. It's all to do with compression damping, it just goes violent. Push down on the forks stationary and it doesn't feel that bad. But on the brakes the cartridge compresses and the one-way valve inside completely shuts off to make the forks go absolutely solid'.

I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

Get your head bearings changed for tapered ones then save up for a Rogering. Its worth the few extra quid. He doesn't just change the spring and oil he changes the valving and the length of the spring spacer. I took mine to him even though its 250 miles away and he set it all up (I had a penske as well) I was well pleased as it totally transformed the bike.
