Misfire.

Post by stormin by day »

Hi all,
I have a problem with my VTR, it has an intermittant misfire, yesterday it was fine for the first 15 miles then kept going onto 1 cylinder for a few secs then back on to 2 when I stopped it was running on both, and was fine then for the next 5 miles when it happened again, Seems like a fuel starvation problem but a friend of mine says it might be a coil on its way out. Any suggestion ?

Welcome aboard stormin by day :!: :D

Your friend's suggestion of a ht coil breaking down is a possibility, so is a faulty spark plug or a spark plug cap :!: What you really need to do is work out which cylinder it's not firing on when it happens, that way it will be easier to locate the problem.

I would have thought a fuel starvation problem would have been there all the time, but things like a split in the vacuum pipe to the fuel tap have been known to happen, also the diaphragm in the fuel tap can need replacing but they normally last a long time :!:

Cheers,

Chris.

I had to replace my front plug cap. When I did I noticed that the half inch or so where the screw goes into the HT lead had become a bit distended, so I trimmed that off and screwed the connectors front and rear into fresh lead so to speak.

It may be as simple as that?
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!
