drive chain adjustment............

Post by VeetyR »

just interested to find out how often u guys adjust the chain on your storms........I have owned the bike since feb and bu*ger me if i havent adjusted it loadsa times already.

I understand that the config of the engine puts more stress on the chain than a four cylinder but it just seems a bit excessive. hahahha

anyway how often u guys do this???

Usually check its not too loose every time I ride it
And adjust it about once a month

To do it initially I put it up on the paddock stand and I have a couple of lengths of angle iron I clamp to the rear wheel so I get the alignment spot on with the front (the swingarm marks are hopelessly inaccurate)

Then after that just turn each adjuster the same amount on both sides when the chain needs tightening

Make sure the chain is clean and properly lubed and you dont do it too tight. These are the main causes for it needing adjusting too often
Also, make sure you are doing the spindle bolt up to the correct torque (108NM)
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

As Ben has already mentioned (Make sure the chain is clean and properly lubed and you dont do it too tight) IMO it does appear that you could be adjusting it too tight, which would explain why it keeps stretching. If you have any tight spots in the chain make sure you adjust it by taking the reading at the tightest spot, not the slackest. I personally find it stretches less by running it slightly on the slack side :!:

According to the Haynes manual:-
Drive chain slack to be between 30mm and 40mm

What I've mentioned I realise you may already be well aware of :!:

One other possibility is worn out cush drive rubbers :!:

I just replaced the chain and sprokets on mine because it was needing adjustment very frequently - weekly when the chain was lubed. When it was off it was apparent that it was well and truly b*ggered. There was so much slack in some of the individual links.

Made the bike that much smoother with the new set, oh and the take away containers cut up (don't like ice cream) to pad out the cush rubbers no helped a lot!! Thanks Ben for that tip....

On mine the seals were shot for whatever reason. Any ideas??
