I've not owned one, but have known several owners. Electrics can be a prolem on certain model years, and they can look tatty if not looked after. The rotax lump seems to be pretty reliable as long as (a) you use good old mineral oil (anything thinner ie semi-synthetic will lead to oil supply problems to the bottom end and eventually it will either start knocking or let go. and (b) don't spend too much time running the bike flat-out as that can also lead to main bearing or big end failure.

VTRSteve owned a 604, he may be able to give you more info if he logs on in time but these are the only major problems I've heard people speak of.

A very agricultural bike which is good cos I stripped and rebuilt mine down to every last nut and bolt with limited mechanical knowledge and tools , pretty heavy for off road use. I had issues with electrics relating to the ignition switch making it hard to start (I couldn't kick it over either!) The clutch tends to be a problem, mine dragged badly most of the time making it hard to get neutral when stopping at junctions etc. Cosmetically they tend to have paint missing around the footpeg area where boots rub on the frame, engine cases etc.

I blew the main bearings on good mineral oil but it had some real abuse over the mountain at the tt2003 followed by a trackday at Oulton(fast group!) so probably self induced. I had a full rebuild done by Denver motorcycles at a cost of £500. Don't expect big power, mine only made 48bhp with a number of small mods inc a performance camshaft. Parts are easy to get from Haines down in Cinderford.

As for riding, a lot of fun but most definitely shortish runs only cos it's pretty uncomfortable after a while. Certainly not the fastest thing out there and even gearing it up made no difference to the top speed - about 90-95 flat out. Respectable tank range, on a par with the storm ie 90miles with normal riding, down to 60ish riding like a nutter. It'll easily keep up with faster stuff on the twistys but I got annoyed at trying to keep up on the fast a roads.

I'd say a definite try before you commit to buying - try to blag a test ride at a dealer as I did. If the bike has both on and off road wheels then be sure all the correct spacers etc are there too. Supermoto wheels are hard to get without spending silly money if it's just got the knobblies so factor that into the price if you want to use it mainly on the road.

Not sure I'd have another now......

the 604 Rotax motor is normally bullet proof, its faults lied with mainatinance. the basic power plant was the same as used on the Armstrong , ATK, and CCM and Army bikes .
the motors are allways in demand for use in classic and twin shock mx bikes.

if you want reliability for not much more money look at the 644 CCM with the Suzuki SV motor in. If you look this way then have a real good check on the cylinder base gasket as they weep then you get a spray mist from the back, ours was done under warranty.

by the way, the 604 CAN be taken out to in the region of 700 thats serious cubes for a single 8O

At that sort of money you can't go wrong with both sets of wheels etc....... I paid £3400 for mine in 2003 from a dealer.

nice buy then, there are a network of dealers out there, the original CCM pre Fogarty is now back and can help with most things. Foggys lot were of little help only interested in shipping out new ones with deals on wheels.
In our area the 'dealers' no longer stock them and dont want to know. One of the Best is Haines http://www.hainesmc.co.uk/ the guys there are good on them.

Alan

With all those parts it hardly says "I was a bike only used on weekends to potter around my local woods" now does it!!!! I mean the bike has CCM (Clues Competition Machinery) on it so ???
Nothing wrong with a well thrashed bike that has been well maintained if the right price etc.
Have fun 'fixing' it to the std you expect.
Mind you that'll make it unrecognisable from this starting point!
Don't forget to take lots of before and after pics

Hi Chris yes i see what you mean but the owner is only 20 no licence is a chemistry student and only used it on the fields for a bit with the intention of doing his test but he his skint, his Dad wasnt happy he bought it either so i think he has forced him to sell aswell.

Like i said it does look untidy but has alot of gear with it and it probably has been raced but

it is a project bike for me and your absolutely right it wont look the same for long
