We was just on a bout these tonight
No such bike mate, the vtr firestorm is a different bike to the vtr sp1-sp2 the differences being the sp1 is more of a track focused bike (sports)and the storm a sports tourer now, SP was built to do one thing and one thing only.
To knock Ducati of the podium in WSB which it did first time out and took the championship from Ducati.
The Firestorm came first then the SP,the storm is carbed the SP fuel injected both have shite fuel range.
The sp has gear driven cams the firestorm chain.
The SP2's fueling was slightly tweaked over the SP1.
SP2 had a different swingarm probably some other changes i'm not aware of i dont know dont own one but someone will be along to tell
Both sound really nice with aftermarket pipes
SP looks the dogs dooda's

Oh sorry mate my mistake i read your post as firestorm sp then sp2
if it was my money id buy the sp hands down but i do love my storm especially now with what i have done to it.
Ive heard the sp is very uncomfortable but also people complain the same about the firestorm, fueling notchy on the sp round town but hell its not meant to be tootled to the shops and back.
cct can be a problem with the storm but if looked after should be fine i dont know of any issue's with the sp as i said i dont own one best bet is to ask people who have them.
Just get the sp you know you want it
its got to be the best looking bike Honda has made since the R30.
It looks fantastic sounds fantastic its not the fastest compared with todays bikes but its got one thing todays bikes hasnt got --------------character,soul and that awesome v twin thunder
thats the end of my sp ramblings
amen

I found that the Firestorm put more pressure on my wrists than the SP. The 'Storm is a great bike, with loads of character.
The SP1/2 are much more focused and uncompromising. The brakes are far superior to the 'Storms and the suspension is leagues ahead (though the rear shock on the SP is naff).
The SP kills my legs.....3 hours is more than enough on it. It is snatchy around town (fit a Power Commandeer and lower the gearing), runs hot (those side mounted rads pump heat out into your torso, the frame gets hot enough to burn you), and it is murder for pillions. You feel hunched over the front tyre, with the wide, splaying tank really limiting the steering lock (don't bother practicing U-turns on one unless you are in a car park). It is heavy, with a high seat.
However, get it on fast, sweeping roads and it becomes alive. The steering is quite slow, but oh-so-precise. The engine pulls from 3000RPM and goes mental at 6000RPM (mine makes more than 70ft/lbs from 5500 to 10000RPM with 80 rear wheel BHP at 5750RPM to a peak of 130BHP at 9500RPM). Give it a big handful coming out of a bend and the bike squats slightly, the back tyre digs into the road, the induction roars and the bike just lunges forward. From behind, it sounds like a rolling thunder storm. the front wheel will waggle slightly as a wave of torque surges you forward, but is doesn't feel uncontrollable. these things are deceptively fast (especially if you are used to inline fours). The bike is a million times better than I am....I constantly feel like it is saying "WTF is he trying to do to me now?"
Nothing (I mean nothing) beats the v-twin sound. The Firestorm has loads of character, but if you want more thrills get a SP1/2. I guarantee you will smile every time you open the garage, and see that piece of WSB history!

Thanks guys,
Never really appreciated the difference between the 3 Three bikes myself.
Although I knew the SP was Honda's challenge to Ducatis' dominance of WSB.
I've oft wondered about getting an SP1 or 2 but not so sure about the duration aches and pains! I do like both the look of them and of course that wonderful V-Twin roar!
From what mate of mine reckons, who's owned all 3, the Firestorm is the best all round bike, for the reasons already mentioned above. If all you're going to do is track days and nice open country roads, the either SP1 or SP2 is the thing.
After not riding the Storm for just over a week, I did about 120Miles last night - Saddle sore!!!! Backs of my thighs ached like billio! could hardly bend to unzip me boots - Not a normal reaction, just lack of use I guess. Or maybe old age creeping in? Although I was riding hard in places so extra temsion gripping tank with knees as well!

Another point is that the SP1 is much more of a race bike. The SP2 has inferior front forks (in Roger's words "b8stard Fireblade forks"). In addition, the SP2 has 12 holes per injector (whereas the SP1 has 4) in order to smooth out the bottom end. The SP2 also has slightly more top end at the expense of mid-range.
The SP2 has a longer swingarm (10mm) for better traction, and has lighter wheels. Both of these can be fitted to the SP1 (the swingarm needs some bushes fabbing up), the wheels are a straight fit.
The Firestorm is a far better all-round bike though, and with a bit of modding (forks, brakes, rear shock, cans an jetting) can be a great bike. I would love (as I guess would most of this forum) to see an updated Honda V-Twin....either a kick-ass "SP-3" to counter the Dukes in WSB or a modern Firestorm (USD forks, 120+ HP, twin headlamps a-la CBR)...now they woul be nice bikes

lets be fair the storm can easily be a great - er bike by sorting the shock and sticking different forks on it
power can easily come from sticking yoshi moriwaki or kent cams in it and there you go - sp2 power
but all of these bikes are absolute garbarge compared to a mille R
for the money of a mille r with ohlins this and that and marsechini or whatever wheels and generally a decent well hard bike, on par if not better than the sp2 for sp1 money
if i had the money id have an animal (sp1) and a mille R
but i think my next bike is going to be a mille (not the R) since ive had nothing but heartache with my 'storm

I think its all been said. However, having owned both I'd say the Storm is a great bike, but the SP is better so long as you can put up with the awful fueling at dawdling speeds.
I was worried that the SP would be uncomfortable, but I actually find it to be OK (and I'm 59!).
So, I'd go for the SP.

Im looking at selling up for an SP2 atm- http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9478 -
Ive got one lined up but I need to sell mine asap. Got to say, I here what most of you are saying as regards comparison between the storm & the SP.
The storm is a great all round bike. I love mine. Ive up graded the forks, tinkered with the suspension and added other bits & bobs to improve performance/handling. You can only do so much though...
The SP just appeals more on all different levels thats all.
Ive looked at RSVR's (pre 03)-find them too tall and Ive spoke to a few lads who have had electrical issues. All in all a gorgeous bike though with serious VFM. Ive also (dare I say it...) lookes at the pro's and con's of Ducati ownership. Too many con's for me though!
The SP's are beautiful bikes. Granted, they are more expensive than RSVR's and maybe dont perform as well as Ducati's in certain circumstances. But IMO I think they are an evocative piece of motorcycling history, with a stonking engine, decent handling and awesome looks. Plus it'll start every time I push the ignition. It'll be a far better bike than im a rider and I know I'll hate it at motorway crawling speed.
It'll not be as fast as the latest jap IL4's, but thats not the point at all...
V-Twins rock!!!

If money is an issue (and it usually is!) then a '97 FireStorm can be had for 1500-2000 UKP which is better value pound for pound (IMHO) than an SP1/SP2.
Also many VTR's are being broken for parts if ever required as they are 7-10 years old now whereas SP1's and 2 spares seem less plentiful.
Good luck! LSM
