Cam Chain Tensioner (boy, this comes up a lot!)

Post by Scott Malcolm »

I think mine went kaputt yesterday. Front cylinder suddenly started making a really loud metallic rapping/tapping/slapping noise. Can anyone give me some names as to where to buy the replacements here in the states? Costs? Also, how many of you have done this repair? Easy? Difficult? Any info you can offer will be appreciated! I'd like to do this immeditely 'cause I hate driving my car!

Thanks!

Scott

:( Sorry to hear about it mate. Mine went a couple of months ago here in the UK, and the dealers fixed it in ten days (got charged six hours labour for the privelidge). If prices in the States are as bad as here, expect a large bill (think mine would be about $900 USD). Mine bent two valves when it went!!
All fixed now, it's bright and sunny here.............some I'm off to frighten the children
Hope you get it fixed soon.
Drink to contentment not to capacity. I just haven't figured out which comes first.

Cam Chain Tensioners

Post by Popell »

Sorry to hear this (not quite as sorry as I was to hear my bike doing the same thing!)
I bought the replacement tensioner from local dealer, was charged just short of £40 and fitted it myself, there is an element of dismantling involved, draining the coolant etc
I found that I had jumped 3 or 4 teeth on the cams, didn't have time to take the head off so threw it back together and hoped!
What a result!, sounds sweeter than ever, and got a mate wanting to change his Falco for a Mille because I kept going passed him.(you know the sort - must have the fastest etc)
I recommend you try it, I will give any help that I can by way of guidance etc.

Curiousity got the best of me yesterday. So I started taking off what I needed to in order to reach the (front) CCT (I didn't have to drain any coolant though?). Getting the airbox off was the biggest pain. Once I got the CCT removed I wasn't really sure how it operated, so I removed the rear CCT as well to do a comparison. Pretty ingenious little device. It appears the only problem with the front one is the tension spring inside has snapped where it fits into the bottom turning slot of the piece with threads on it. I don't know if Honda or anybody will sell you this spring, but that seems to be the only problem that can go wrong with these things. Seems a damn shame to replace the whole part for a busted spring. I'm going to investigate today to see whether or not I can find one, if not, I'll probably just buy some of those APE manual tensioners, as they aren't to expensive.

Has anyone tried to replace this spring?

Cam Chain Tensioner

You're right, only drained the coolant to get to the cams themselves and to see if the alignment had held. My spring broke at the other end, one loop down from where the 'hook' anchors the spring, I did fashion a new hook on the loose end but thought it best to replace the lot. I could not get the spring separately although if you have access to spring manufacturer, it should be possible. The only manual tensioners that I saw when I was looking were from USA - where did you see them and how much were they. It is a common fault so may replace with manual next time.
