Re: TPS Adjustment: Was 840 - Now 590 Can't get to 500 - No

Thanks again for the info. Ok, well, taken on board the fresh comments about reaching the 500 value. when I searched these forums (after 1st finding out about this thing) people were saying how accurate trying to get it, 501, 502 etc etc, so from that it sounded like it was deemed important. Glad to...

Re: TPS Adjustment: Was 840 - Now 590 Can't get to 500 - No

Like Popkat said, all you have to do is bend the lower metal tab down to create a larger gap that the TPS fits into. Remove TPS to access and bend it very gently with pliers. You will easily get 500 ohms this way. Much easier than machining bolts. Thanks. Well, it's too late now :) And at work tomo...

Re: TPS Adjustment: Was 840 - Now 590 Can't get to 500 - No

Fuel filter is internal to the tank - http://www.bike-parts-honda.com/pieces-honda-detail-4938-13MBBV41-VTR1000FV-1997-F__1500-VTR+1000+FIRE+STORM.html Try fitting a new rubber vacuum diaphram in the fuel tap to stem the drippy leak. Almost looks like 2 vertical filters in that exploded view! I jus...

Re: TPS Adjustment: Was 840 - Now 590 Can't get to 500 - No

Thanks to you both. Ok, well, as I said, I've probably lowered the tickover speed down too low at the moment, to get my 590 result. I've done a bit of calculation/measurement, and if I grind the screws down on dia. where the screw passes thru the TPS unit, leaving full thread on the end, then I can ...

TPS Adjustment: Was 840 - Now 590 Can't get to 500 - No Way!

Following on from my (beginners!) Carb take apart (which has gone well so far, thought of course no idea till it's back on the bike!) I was told about setting the TPS to 500. I did a search on these forums, and elsewhere and indeed, this 500 number seems to be the agreed value, some saying some even...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

Thanks for the helpful post. Ok, well jets are as clean as clean can be, due to last night manual cleaning, with spray and today at work in ultrasonic tank. I removed, and cleaned both the plastic floats (dried fuel on the plastic) I took the float valves out with the little rubber 90' points and th...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

I know you've got plenty to do with the carb clean, but while they are out is the easiest time to reset the Throttle Position Sensor. That is the electrical gadget on the side of the carbs. Quite often they're not set too well at the factory, but if you have a multimeter it is an easy job to loosen...

Re: Pilot Jet Hole - Is it a really small thru hole?

Then you are in good shape. Also yes I did mean the pilot jet not the emulsion tube when I said there are 3 small holes in there. If you look down the small hole in the pilot jet, there are 3 smaller holes that actually meter the fuel. That is why pilots are so hard to get clean. Really? ...

Re: Pilot Jet Hole - Is it a really small thru hole?

There are actually 3 small holes inside the 1 hole you can see. Also the emulsion tubes are different front to rear. If you have mixed them up, there is a pic that shows where they should go. I've been careful and they are in pots, with numbers on and kept both bits on their respective sides (pots)...

Pilot Jet Hole - Is it a really small thru hole?

Been cleaning my carbs tonight, Jet's out, and using carb cleaner (not sure how aggressive the cleaner is, but think it's an ok one) Jet's had a fair bit of gritty bits over them, and some surface dirt, been using various methods to remove it and clear holes. I thought the carb cleaner would burn th...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

Suck/blow etc etc...... As bike has only been left 2 years hopefully they won't be that bad.. The fuel tank diaphragm can be cleaned, make sure your clear about how things go back together as you take it apart. Thank you very much for the great advice. I just need to get a tin of (brand name?) STP ...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

Now my carb assembly is out....... And before I do something (and someone comes along afterwards and says, of you should of done it some other way!) I'd love to hear advice here as to the best order of steps to take? I could dump the whole thing in paraffin, or smother it with general engine cleaner...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

Brave lad, Tempest. We'll make a mechanic out of you yet! Just to clarify a few previous posts. Best practice when storing a bike long term is to drain the carb bowls before storing. Fuel will evaporate and leave deposits behind in jets and float valves and give problems. The fuel tap on the tank i...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

A quick tip if you ever remove them again.....There is no need to undo the throttle cables from the bracket that mounts to the carbs. Instead of undoing the cables, just remove the 2 screws that fix the plate to the carbs and the whole assembly will lift off. Thanks. This is part of the p...

Re: Bikes been sitting too long, now does not want to start.

Lever between the rear cam cover and the centre of the rear carb, use a flat bar with plenty of rag for protection.. the bands nearest the cylinder head don't need to be undone, screw then back up you want to remove the carbs not the rubber stubs.. the chokes unscrew from the carb with 10mm spanner...
