fuel light

Is the fuel light on my 1997 storm Supposed to come on with the ignition and go off when It's running?
Only asking because I have never seen it come on yet but I fill it up at 100 miles so maybe the level is too high?
If I disconnect the plug to the sender should the light come on?

Thanks
