Fault?

Post by NZSpokes »

My bike has just developed a fault.

Seems to be running on one and the front header is cold. Jets are clear, have blown out the carbs, slides seem fine. Strong spark, seems to be charging. Fuel delivery is strong.

It just idles but when I open the throttle it dies. :confused

Run the battery flat with so much starting. Am wondering if the battery is dying.

Open to ideas.

It could be a coil breaking down, Plug, or Fueling etc. does it slowly rev up, or stall only if you open it quickly? you need to give us a bit more info.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!

Soon as I open the throttle it dies.

Starting to think more this is a battery dying. Will fit a different one in the morning.

It wouldn't hurt to check what voltage you're getting at the battery terminals when the bike is running, plus see how far down the volts drop when starting :?:

Have you checked your air hoses and made sure a carb hasn't popped off? Pulling in too much air?
If it aint broke, get your bloody hands off it!

Check reg rec first.
Over voltage will cause a coil to stop sparking.
Undo drain screw in front Carb to see if there's fuel in the bowl.
If there's fuel, then it'll be spark.
Swap cools over to see if the rear pipe is then cold.
At least you know which pot it is.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I'd be tempted to put some petrol in a little garden hand pump sprayer (atomiser) & spray it into the snorkel or remove the air box lid when its idling.

If the revs rise more than you can get it to rev by turning throttle grip, you have an issue with the fuel supply. If its the same, its electrical.

When running the bike with the tank removed, I have/use an old washing up liquid container with the bottom cut away & the nozzle pushed into the fuel pipe. Keep an eye on the level & I don't put too much fuel in case it spills out.

I always have a couple of wet/damp towels & a fire extinguisher close to hand also.

I found out the hard way, No amount of screaming & bashing a fire with an empty tool bag puts the flames out :wtf:

Cheers, yes have checked the front bowl and fuel there.

Its got a mosfet? Reg but will check it today with a fresh battery. Bit early here to run the VTR at 5k rpm. Sunday morning and all.

Confirmed battery fault. Charging at just under 14v at 5k rpm so charging system look fine. Charged battery and it runs as normal.

Time to shop for a new battery.
