Rear Shock (remove & fit new)

Post by JohnD »

OK... so my next task is to fit my new shock to my 'Storm (& also grease/service the suspension linkage etc while i'm there).

Does anyone have any tips/advice for rear shock removal?

One thing i'm wondering for example is - can I get away with removing just the silencers for clearance? or should I remove the downpipe assembly too?

(BTW I will be using an abba stand)

Hi John,

See this link - although you probably have as you posted on it a while back.

IMO it'll be easier, if not imperative, to remove the down pipe from the rear cylinder especially for the linkages.

Don't forget, you're going to want something to support the swingarm unless you have something nice and soft for it to land on!

Check my pics above - I managed to leave the rear header in place -

To finally drop the shock just undo the top mounting bolt just behind the tank/in front of battery.

WD40, roll ups and a big hammer are useful to have handy

Well done - hopefully you had some interior workshop space out the cold - Any problems during the job?

Did you need to take the rear headers off? Any pics of the new shock

No, no workshop! Did it out in the friggin cold!

The whole thing actuallly went pretty well... obviously the linkage bolts were a little hard to budge at first... but they came eventually. Linkage spacers, bearings etc were all in pretty good nick... for a 1997 storm!

Also managed to do it without taking the headers off. Took the linkage arm out first & then dropped the shock out thro the bottom. :D

Will try get pics added later this weekend.

Also could do with some of those rubber mount thingys & brackets for the remote reservior... anyone know the best place to find these?

Couple of pics of ma new Maxton shocker if anyone's interested !

Also (for info) Penske sell the rubber mounts & clamps to attach the remote reservoir to the frame (no pics of this sorry - it's on the other side!)
