Fuel on an SP-2
Fuel on an SP-2
hi my insurance is up in 20 days on the storm just did a new quote and best is 250 quid 3rd pary fire and theft with 3 thousand miles per year, yes i know i do a lot more.
just done a quote for a 2004 SP-2 same info as the storm but listed more bike value, got thrid party fire and theft 525 quid
i spend 120 quid a month on fuel just for going to and from work at the moment, will the SP-2 be any better on fuel?
its proabably the only bike i would trade this in for, i do like the old RSV tho but think ill stick with me honda

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
depends on what size tank you have, my old man has a storm with the 19ltr tank and i get the same if not more as he has a dodgy wrist so uses the stop on the throttle more than i do LOL not really he just has more experience and bigger nuts, or is that no brain, sorry i get confused.
i have had over 130 out of a tank and i ain't fitted the PC yet which still sits in the shed.
if you use it a lot then watch for the repairs as they ain't as cheap to get the parts for. get a cheap VFR for work and the sp as a toy

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
Can only do one bike mate, well one decent bike. I have a 2000 model storm with the 16l tank.
Was just thinking the sp with it's fuel injection must be more Economical?

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
In my experience buy the SP2 and a PC111, set it up for fuel economy and not only do you have a more grin inducing machine but ultimately better mpg.
I used a 2001 Storm with a 16 litre tank for a couple of years, I now ride a SP1 with PC111 and it's definately got better range, during "normal" riding conditions.
PS: dont waste your money on a RSV, i went that way and although it was a good machine it ain't a patch on a Honda.
Just my opinion of course!

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
TBH Seb, if it's improved MPG your wanting I think your maybe looking in the wrong direction.
Twins never seem to return good MPG, added to the fact tank sizes are small on the SP and the Storm. Out of the four I've had the Buell was the best. The VTR1000F was very thirsty and the TL wasn't much better. I do understand the fact you're into your VTwins though-I couldn’t go back to a four
I've not been on my SP yet
but I'm not expecting miracles
Then again, I didn’t buy a full on race bike for fuel efficiency
If I'd have wanted that I'd have stayed well away from two pots

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
yeh i love twin's been on quite a few inline 4's and they just dont do it for me, they have no soul
when i was little i allways wanted a TL1000R i remeber being about 12 years old in some shop allong a main road and herd this engine thumping getting closer then it stopped at the lights, omg the noise was fantastic the shop widows was booming it was the TL1000R
i like big singles with there thump and i love the twin, i had a blast on an R6 and a brand new ZX6R last year was shocked how little responce i felt from the engine and the lack of engine braking too, ive hada little ride on my dads RR3 but not opened it up
ive wanted an SP for ages but got this firestorm off the dad (paid for) this month its being registerd as me as the keeper and not my dad so thinking of flogging it in for a SP-2
was thinking if the fuel MPG might be better it might ecual the insurance diffrance out over the year (250 for the storm, 525 for the SP-2)

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
Seb,
IMHO if you want something better on fuel don't look in the 1000cc class
I've emailed you about insurance.
Chris.

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
I've only run up a couple of renewal quotes for the SP and I'm looking around £110-£125

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
my storm the most ive had was 117 miles before reserve light on, that was riding at like 56mph on the motoreway, usualy im looking at 80 miles / 90 miles before a fill up
my isurance quote was from MCE for the storm at 250 quid, 24 years with 1 years no claims and no points
i tired E bike and they was £595 so dont think ill use them.
Falcon bikes was the cheepest for me on an SP-2 at £525
think i may stick with the Storm another year then or get one Close to Next Christmas
i wouldnt change down to a smaller bike as i use this for work and pleause too, ive had a look at the CBR600RR's but they just feel to cramped and tiny
the R6 doesnt feel like it has enough presence either, i much prefer the likes of the RSV and other lager bikes being 6'3 i look a Richard on smaller bikes

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
If you're 6'3 mate I think you'd find an SP too small
I'm 5'9 and it's just right for me.
The Ape would be a better proposition (physically
) for someone of your size. Much more room. Lots about at the right money too. I've seen a few RSV's for sale recently at bargain prices.

Just done one through Tesco after looking through a few searchs on the forum-good shoutJbrebel wrote:I've only run up a couple of renewal quotes for the SP and I'm looking around £110-£125

Got it sorted to commence next month when my renewal is up-£111.97-only a couple of quid more than the Muell.

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
I think you will find that the SP2 is a little thirsty, due to them having bigger throttle bodies than the SP1 and where the SP1 has 4 injectors per body, the SP2 has 12.
Also I am led to believe that V Twins run richer due to the configuration of the engine, the more fuel you put in the bike the cooler it runs, that is why you have a larger jet for the rear cylinder, cause its behind the front cylinder and does not get the same air flow for cooling.
It don't help having the rads on the side of the bike, one thing I am planing to try whilst the bike is in pieces, is fit a fan on a manual switch to the second radiator, so I can keep the bike cool in traffic.

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
i have had 135 out of a tank full, 2 up on standard bike apart from the exhaust, the baffles just fell out of both of them as i was leaving to go out, shame that.

Re: Fuel on an SP-2
Right........ this is a question that I can answer with some authority (for a change
) They both can drain their tanks in under 100 miles but the Storm is worse. I never during my ownership of the Storm got 142 miles before light on which I did on the SP2. Both are uncomfortable round town with the SP2 being worse at 30mph but once out of town there is only one winner......
If you want 40+mpg buy a Fireblade/GSXR. I dont commute but if I did I would buy an IL4/Triple, I ride to enjoy life so my choice is the SP2. Only a lottery win or illness would make me part with my SP now.
