Hello hello!
I admit, I have been lurking in the shadows somewhat.... but only a while.
Even Santa had avoided buying me one for a number of years, so I eventually bought my own Storm just before Xmas! Its a 2000 racing red, 27k on the clock (question regarding this following shortly), high rise pipes, some pimped indicators etc. Nothing too radical unfortunatley. Now I need a profile picture I have a legitimate excuse to go and take some photos!
I live down in Portsmouth so if anyone is around then let me know! I did see someone on a nice red SP1 down in Christchurch last weekend who game me the welcoming VTR look so hello if your on here!
Now, the sad news, Im off to work in KSA in March so I have to miss the majourity of the summer but hopefully il be able to afford to pimp Roxanna (my bike) to hell when I return!
Right, now the technical stuff. I've been reading the forums as much as I can as im planning to do some servicing soon. The bike had a new CCT ( I assume on the front) in Aug 08, about 1500 miles ago. But im terrified every rattle I hear it could be the end of my fun so I am considering manuals? Is the rattle likely to be at tickover or say cruising in 2nd sort of speed? or am I just worrying about a gearbox noise?
Secondly, Ive noticed my tachometer/odometer reads really high?! Last weekend I did 90 miles on the gps (which my mates bike agreed with) but mine read around 110. As far as I know everything in the power train is standard so are there any obvious reasons for this?! Its adding a fair bit to my clock mileage so I would like to get it sorted!
Finally, even with my fruity distance readings, my mpg is around 125 , so that’s only actually around 100? My friend seems to think its also running a little lean, how can I tell?
Now look what’s happened, it started as a quick intro and now im waffling away... Hopefully i’ll get a better response from you chaps than my girlfriend. I think she jealous of Roxanna.

Re: Hello VTR'ers.
hello!
dunno about the speedo thing - i thought the same, no way am i doing 100...
so i stuck my tomtom on the tank and it wasnt far out at all.
riding behind some cars it was bang on 30.
theyre just deceptively quick with the big lazy engine.
125 feels a lot quicker on my 750/4 (on my private road o/c)

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Rev the engine to 2000rpm and listen to the engine, my mechanic says this is when the chain goes slack and the tensioner is needed the most, so if its on the way out it will rattle at that point. With this in mind, as to not put too much pressure on the CCT when riding I try to keep gunning it and letting off the throttle to a minimum as this is putting a lot of strain on the CCT, that is until I modify the new ones I am buying will not stop then failing but will stop the failure becoming catastrophic.

Welcome aboard Martyn
I would describe the start of a CCT spring going to sound like a slapping noise which can be heard when slowing down on the over run, IE. changing down when coming up to a junction, it comes from the cam chain tunnel.
From the research I've done on the Firestorm CCT's, I found it was more like 3,000rev's when the tension alters on the CCT's.
You have a few options for piece of mind, which you may or may not have found on here already.
(1) Fit fixed (Ape style) tensioners.
(2) Do the stopper mod (this allows the CCT's to operate as Mr Honda intended but stops further damage [as bazza mentions] if one does let go)
(3) Fit new standard CCT's at regular intervals if you feel you can trust them.
Regarding your over reading speedo, first I would check the sprockets, they should be, front 16tooth, rear 41tooth if they're standard. If they're not standard a Speedo Healer will correct that.
Chris.

It's when one goes, I look at it that they will fail, it's what your prepared to do to prevent it and when.sirch345 wrote:Welcome aboard Martyn![]()
