Has my Regulator / Rectifier finally gone kapput?

Post by JohnD »

Hey folks

Long time since I've posted on this forum... so apologies for that.

Anyway... here's the problem... had problem starting the bike yesterday... felt like a weak battery, but it finally started. (PS battery was new in winter).

Got home charged battery up, but it seemed was pretty much charged anyway. Put fully charged battery back in bike, and still got same problem - bike just about turns over (most of the time) but just not enough juice to get it going.

So I bought some multimeters, and got my Haynes manual out, and have deduced that the starter relay is fine, so onto the R/R...

Did the Haynes tests for the R/R (Chapter 9.33), and the first one where you measure the DC voltage from the red/white terminal & earth gave me a reading of 12.16v. Continuity on the green wire to earth was ok, and I got a bit confused with the ohmage tests on the yellow wires TBH !!!

So I think the R/R has gone, but would like a second opinion if at all possible please! ...or suggestions of any other easy diagnostic tests (that don't involve starting the bike!).

Also have had a few blown headlight bulbs too during the last year or so... which again makes me think faulty R/R?

Many thanks in advance for any help given!

cheers
John

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Simple thing I know but have you checked the connection to the starter?
Corrosion & general crapage under the rubber boot?

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
