I've spoken to my local garage reference these and fitting the manual ones for me as I'm no mechanic! The reply I had was that they are a racing part and would require major work to set them every time it needed doing and also that Honda have changed the ones they supply and it's no longer a problem... Just wondering what you experts thought of that??

Also dont believe this, there has been no proof that the new parts are any better than old parts, and those who have stripped them apart cant see any difference.
There is even a sound arguement that when they are kept in stores as a service part they are kept fully wound in, so all the time they are waiting for you to buy them the spring is at its highest stress level, so that this could also be bad news.

Your mechanic is giving you poor information and it sounds like he is not as well informed about the Firestorm as the collective group on here.

As you will see from other threads I personaly like to keep the self adjusting tensioner [as Honda planned], but have used the "stopper mod" invented by some people on this forum to provide a fail safe. but many people have fitted the manuals and have found them easy to look after once they get comfortable setting the tension by listening for a rattle then going a little tighter from there.

Your mechanic is
1. either a committed Honda employee unwilling or unable to think outside the corporate box, or
2. too ashamed to admit that he doesn't know much about it, and instead of finding out, is playing safe/making it up, or
3. looking forward to the eventual rebuild job.

Give him the site address, and ask him whether he's ever owned one.

Personally I'd rather trust those who own and know the bikes, and who put their own money (and lives) on the line by practising what they preach.

the only racing parts on the firestorm are the rider's right fist and a little switch in his brain.

the major work is like 3hrs spannerwork to fit, (then maybe 15 mins every 10k tops to adjust) - which i suppose in the average dealership IS major work, seeing as all they do these days is drink tea from a machine while they plug your bike into a laptop, then spend the remaining 1/2 day writing out yur bill.

tell the mechanic i'll have some of these new everlasting camchain tensioners off him... as long as he signs to say they will outlast the engine and replace any parts for free when they fail.

best thing to do imo is grip his collar, nut him soundly in the face and tell him he's a fkin Richard and is talkin shite.

If you are competent enough to take the tank, airbox and cam cover off, then fitting the manual CCTs is not difficult.
Don't be tempted to get the chain too tight. Remember it will tighten up once the engine gets hot and expands.

it shouldnt be tight at all.
there should be at least 10 - 12mm play in the chain, halfway up & down.
too tight & it will wear the camshaft white metal bearing , camchain, guides etc.
it would have to be extremely loose to skip the cog.

A ride down (or up) to Tony.mon is a solution.
If I need any work done that I can not do myself then Tony's the guy I'd trust.
