Exhausts...again

Post by Miztaziggy »

So after blowing out yet another packer thing with some more backfires, I took the bike apart during the week to replace it.

Finishing it all up today was a nightmare, it just didnt want to go back together for some odd reason. When it finally did, the end cans look to be in a different position now.

Before I started last weekend, the end cans just touched the sides of my number plate. Now they are both about 20mm from the sides, as if the cans are now fitted in a wider position. I left the cans attached to the link pipes while doing all this, and the link pipe to foot peg brackets are very tight, there isnt much room for manoeuvre so I dont know what is causing the cans to be positioned differently now :eh: :eh:

Trying to get them airtight again after putting back together was a nightmare too. How do you guys seal the link pipe to downpipe joints?

I ended up with both of them blowing, so put some gun gum stuff on before fitting, and they still blew. In the end, I had to make a bandage thing to cover the joints, then cover in gun gum to get a seal. Taken me pretty much all fkin day.

If the rear downpipe isn't fully inserted into the header the header sits lower, and that alters the angle the cans sit at, and makes it difficult to line up footrest hanger supports on the link pipes if you have some.

Try loosening everything off and reassembling.
A smear of grease or coppaslip helps the joints to slide together easily.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Sounds strange that they have moved, perhaps haunted by the ghost of backfires.

On the sealing side, I use high temp silicon, but I doubt it will be any good on big gaps, but is great to seal pipes that fit reasonably snug.

Exhausts...again

Do you mean the rear cylinder one? I used a car jack to force it up and then tighten the he'll out of it using a miklor or similar clamp.
No bike (yet).

For sealing if the gap is large try wrapping some foil round the joint as well as the gum

I don't get why you have a gap at all. There is nothing sealing mine and they are absolutely fine. Just one pipe inside the other with a clamp around it. The link pipe is a nice snug fit inside the down pipe and with the clamp it just squeezes everything nice and tight.

Tiny you might just be lucky that they are all snug. One of mine was a little sloppy & I had to use foil to fully seal it. I do believe its an MOT fail if they are blowing

Quite possibly, though my last set fit perfectly too. Both sets from fuel exhausts though and they are very well made.

Hmm well maybe it wasnt all the way in last time then, because this time it most definitely was, I had it jacked up whilst I put the rest of the bits on. I guess then as the header drops, it pulls the end cans upwards and inwards?

My old scorpion cans to header pipe joints were fairly snug and were air tight with just the clamps...for some reason these ones arent and although they feel quite snug, the clamps just dont seal the joints.

There are a couple of different types of aftermarket link pipes; some just clamp without a gasket, but some are designed to use the standard Honda compressible ones.

But on the ones that just clamp metal to metal, the outer one has one or two slots cut in it, which are designed to allow the pipe to close up when clamped.
These may be too long; if your cans or headers aren't inserted past the end of the slot, you have to either cover the hole with the clamp, or use some other sealing method.

I've had bikes that misfire badly because of this, and it's worth checking.

I know I'm kinda new to the workshop side to be suggesting stuff but it sounds like if you've got the clamps on nice and tight then its either tony's suggestion, or perhaps the angle of the link to header pipe is putting leverage on the joint and acting against the clamp.

I noticed you said that the cans were positioned differently, maybe they have a specific rotation, have you got the sides mixed up perhaps? Stands to reason, if they are both closer than before, assuming they have some kind of angle, if you switch them around, they'd move away again?

Has to be something like that I guess, since you know the pipes are the correct diameters.

Sorry if its a grandma suck eggs type of comment, just what I thought about when I read your post.

All comments welcome :)

I thought about rotation too, but they have to be a certain rotation to fit the brackets to the foot pegs, so ruled that out. They cant be put on wrong sides as they are different.
