Oh dear - rather worrying noise, pointers please

Post by BigVeeGrin »

Hoping for some pointers in the right direction guys. Two things have happened and not sure if related or what they could be, but as a worrying type it's, well worrying me!

1. A week or so ago, changing from first to second was very noisy and accompanied by a lot of clunking and assumed pain, at low and especially med-high revs.

2. Last night I noticed for the first time a rhythmic, clonking when under load and pulling away. Clutch action seems fine, gear engages, it's when you start moving it notices - and given the nature of it I'm guessing it's rotation related!

Engine sounds fine on start up, revs freely and normally when no transmission. Happens when the clutch engages and pull away. Will try and get a recording, and not sure if it happens at higher speed etc due to wind noise etc.

BVG, Check both sprockets and chain for excessive wear, it could be the chain is slipping on a badly worn front sprocket. Also check rear wheel bearings and swing arm bearings for wear, and the sprocket carrier bearing check that to. Another thing to check for is worn out cush drive rubbers, they are in behind the rear sprocket carrier. If these are badly worn you'll be able to move the rear sprocket back and forth with the rear wheel stationary.

Yes, I, too am out with the Mrs this weekend forgetting the shopping.

If I can persuade her to have a fourth glass of wine I'm hoping to get her to forget the children, too.

A third bottle and I can order the nitrous kit from E-Blag.

Oh, about that noise- check sprockets/chain, as has been said, but otherwise, clutch, or output shaft bearing.
If it ain't them, it's a gearbox jobbie.
Here's a pointer, though, to make you feel better:

First investigation and I guess I need a new chain and sprocket given the state of this!

would that be the culprit?

BVG, I agree, that sprocket is quite badly worn and I would replace it with a chain and sprocket kit. However it doesn't look like it's worn enough for the chain to be slipping on it, so I don't think that is your problem.
