Final drive replacement

Post by Opel »

Due to final drive noise and vibration, it’s time for new a new chain and sprocket kit… (I think). I can’t adjust out the symptoms and there’s ‘slight’ hooking of the rear sprocket.

Where’s the best deal to be had? Nothing special… miles not bling.

Mine has a 16T 44T combination that I’ll been keen to get rid of and therefore will want standard sizes. I can only imagine that this (the 44T rear) will accentuate the wear due to the increase acceleration.

I’ve had my storm for 51 weeks now (!) and have done 3.8K (-11.7%) so that’s 3300 miles. I’ve looked after the final drive but with the increased acceleration, you can’t help but ride it like you stole it (off the line and accelerating out of the turns etc), I suspect that it has done me well—especially when I don’t know how long they were on before I got the bike. I suspect they’ve been on a while due to the layer of dirt that I had to remove.

So how long on average do chains and sprockets last on a storm (very spirited/progressive riding…)?

Many thanks for any experienced reply... 8)

Also check to see if your cush-drive rubbers needs replacing.

Thanks... please deleat if considered a waste of bandwidth.

Did search but didn't find specific answer. Will have a look at busters and will assume that 4K+ is about on par for chain life...

Not cush drive... but how you judge that it's wombles has me thinking... but it's all there with no lumps missing.

A decent x-ring chain & sprocket should give 20k+ though even the OEM chain should have a decent life if not abused, kept adjusted and maintained. With a scott-oiler C&S life can increase significantly. Though factors like hammering it around and if like me you live near sand quarries will shag C&Ss (After having to regularly commute through sandy roads I now avoid them like the plague as the gritty sand gets picked up by the lube to makes a nasty grinding paste that eats chains).

With the engine switched off, put the bike in gear and raise the rear wheel off the ground. Then hold the wheel and move it back and forth while watching the rear sprocket. There should be a little movement. If it looks excessive then you'll need to replace the rubbers. Symptoms on the bike is that the drive will feel snatchy. Cost to fix approx £30 or as some have done here shim the rubber blocks in the casing with thin plastic strips from ice cream containers ( as used on Blue Peter with leftovers from Tracey Island model or sumfink)

busters C+S sets start at £85 on eblag in parts n accessories....bikeit.co.uk start at £125 but thats for a triple S chain....i've had a busters set on for a few months now and not needed to adjust it yet....i also padded out my cush drive with squares cut from an old pushbike inner tube, any thicker and you can't get the carrier back in without tapping it but tbh it's better to fit a new cush drive if you can
