Sluggish Storm?

Post by rumbler »

Its standard apart from a K&N filter & 15T front sprock, but couldn't match a Pan on the back straight at Donnington. Also, accelleration from ton+ is a bit minimal.

Fuel consumption is suspiciously good, cruising at 90+ gives 120 miles before RLOD.

Any ideas?

Any recommends for a decent dynotester Swindon area? :(

Hi (I'm in cheltenham if you ever fancy a rideout)

My VTR has the same mods except I've got a dynojet and scorpion exhausts. I get circa 94 miles before the RLOD comes on.

Don't experience the slow accelleration either.

I had mine checked over recently at P.E.S.T in Gloucester they are on Southgate Street near Llantony Road. Good guys and very helpful.

Sounds like its running weak, especially if you have a K&N and no other mods. Don't forget your odometer will read wrong as well as the speedo with a 15T front sprocket, so it probably isn't 120 miles in reality

Sluggish

Post by rumbler »

Thanks for the info on PEST, I'll give them a try.

It might be running weak, I'll check the plugs. The throttle response is OK so I thought it might have been Dynojetted (the K&N was fitted by the previous owner, so I can't tell) is there any way to tell?

The speedo has been re-calibrated with a yellow box and seems to be about right judging from my car, so its not a long way out.

One other thing- it's not a wheelie machine- though I do have a 5mm spacer under the rear shock, could just be me but the front does seem well planted which all adds up to being down on power.

An easy check is look at the plugs, if its been dyno jetted it colours up differently than normal.
A more of an orange/tan, difficult to explain

Dynojet

Post by rumbler »

Found out how to tell if carbs have been dynojetted- the standard needle only has one groove- not adjustable. Dynojet kit includes a needle with more than one- 4? grooves. Just whip the top off the carbs.

Don't bother going that far. I thought you were after a quick way to check. Why dont you just pull out your airfilter and lift the carb slides by hand?
Yuo can tell by the grooves and the finish of the metal if it's Dyno jet needles. Still faster to look at the plugs though

Now that you mention it, I keep it in a garage couple of doors up from us, as our garage is an office now. One morning I came out and there were new tyres on it....................... naah Pete, just curious as to how you tell the difference between standard and dyno jets  .

New Tyres, Ha that would be cool instead of bits going missing.

By lifting the slides up in the carbs you can check two things.
1) Has an extra hole been drilled in the bottom of the slide to increase the lift of the slide and make acceleration a bit crisper
2) the Dyno jet needles have adustable hights done by a simple circlip which slots into grooves at the top of the needle, the std Honda ones don't have these grooves also they have a part no stamped into them but I cant remember if you can read it if they are still assembled in the slide.
Unfortunatley you can't tell what size main jet is fitted untill you take the floatbowl out.
If you are unsure if your bike is jetted to the best of it's ability the best solution would be to take it to a good dyno shop and have them do a diagnostic run. It's only about £25-£30 quid here. Or if you've got some time on your hands I'm sure someone on here will have the same combo of exhaust/filter and you could just copy their settings and do it yourself.

Dyno'd ??

Post by rumbler »

Bike must have a dyno kit as the needles have grooves, well the rear carb does (much easier to strip). How many holes are there in the slide as standard? Mine has 3 and I guess this is one more then Honda intended?

Air filter well fouled, so that won't be helping. I found out the hard way its dead easy to over oil a K&N, so bad it wouldn't rev over 6,000. Nasty mess in the airbox was the only damage though.

Heh heh, did the same myself before, and the engine nearly turned itself inside out sucking for air. One of those bright moments after coming home from the boozer at 3am and deciding that it was a great time to re oil the filter that had been drying for the evening.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks he can do anything whilst under the influence in the early hours.
