not sure about the gap mate, but i got my lever straightened by heating it with a hairdrier and gently applying pressure to bend it straight, just remember if it goes snap which is a 50/50 you will be on your hands and knees grovelling for a new one.....
If you don't have a blowtorch or oxy acetylene the you're better off heating it on a gas ring on your cooker.
If you don't have gas, then use a paint stripper gun.
If it snaps anyway, drill the end and use a bolt with a locknut either side until you can order or buy a spare.
Can't remember if the gap's always there, but if you put a washer behind it you shouldn't have.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

The gear lever can be sorted by cutting off the bent toe selector bar, drilling a hole with a counter sunk rear and using one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300638209195
I bought a bent gearchange to fit uprated bearings to the linkage and did this. It looks Ok and you wouldn't pick it out from stock.
Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero F3, 954 USD front, K Tech springs, Braced swinger, Ohlins shock, Six spoke Mockesini wheels, Harris rearsets, QaT, Flywheel diet!, A&L stacks, stick coils, K&N, FP Ti jets, Mori pipe's [colour]
And here's another bodge that got me out of trouble once-
Take the short arm that normally fits on vertically downwards from the gearchange output shaft from the engine, turn it 90 degrees so that it sits horizonally.
Then take a piece of string (I used electrical flex) and make a loop from the end of that little lever , under the engine, up the other side, over the tank and back down to the short lever again, to make a continuous loop.
To change gear, pull it left or right.
Got me home once with a leg in plaster after a little incident at a rally, two-up, with camping gear. Busted leg, AND busted gearchange lever, some days you can't do a thing right.

Yes there should be a gap, as the swing arm has to rotate and the foot peg is static.......it's all clamped up on the inner bearing spacers , not the outer .... so all is good.
i'd be more bothered about that chain snapping!
get it oiled lol!
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Thanks for that!

It's fine! It's just surface dirt, the chain is thoroughly smothered with white lithium grease.
I clean it once a month and re coat it, I know it looks awful but it is really ok!

All in good time! The swingarm is getting removed, cleaned, primed and painted very soon!
