CCT Questions....
Hey Guys,
Iv been reading up on how to change my CCT's but I just wondered if I could pick your brains before I have a go at doing the job myself?
Unfortunatley I ended up buying Auto Genuine (Standard CCT's) before reading the threads on here DOH!!.... I should have got the Manuals!!
Anyway Iv got them now.
I was reading the 'Stopper Mod' thread and need to know a little more (Before I have enough confidence to attemp lol!)
I dont have a Haynes manual and wondered if anyone has a write-up on how to make the CCT lock off tool please?
Also, what exactly is it that im locking off with this tool? Why cant I simply undo the 2 bolts holding the CCT in place (After setting up timing marks)
Also, it says in the write up 'How to remove CCT' (Great write-up) that I only have to remove the rear cylider head/cam cover. Why only the Rear?
Also, to make the actual 'Stopper' using a small piece of metal rod. Can I simply use any type of steel as long as its the right size?
Sorry for all these questions, Im no mechanic although im quite mechanically minded. I do all my jobs on the bike (And car) myself but this is the first time iv attempted anything to do with the timing side and timing marks etc

Have you read this thread here http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720 may be helpful. If I was you I would get in touch with Bazza that's if you want the stopper mod. But whatever you do, do not put them in as they are, or they will fail one day.
Not done the stopper mod myself I'm going for manuals!

Check the workshop knowledgebase for a downloadable Honda service manual in PDF for making the tool - but if replacing the CCTs with manuals you can when the timing is set correctly for each old CCT gently undo each retaining bolt a bit at a time and ease them out DO NOT remove CCts willy nilly as the timing must be at the correct or you risk timing Cam Chain jumping.

If the timing is correct and visually confirmed by taking the easier of the two, rear cam, cover then you know precisely where you are when turning over the engine to the next mark for the front timing for the removal and installation of the front CCT.rear cylider head/cam cover. Why only the Rear?

I got the CCT's from a private seller on eBay so won't be able to get my money back.
I think the way forward of me then going on what's been said is to adapt the ones iv got in terms of the stopper mod. Then recruit the assistance of a local specialist to fit them for me. TBH as much as I would really love to have a go myself I think on this occasion, even with the great write ups on here from you guys, I think Im out of my depth here!
What Would be the best way to contact Bazza regarding the stopper mod?

I think Bazza converts standard OEM CCTs into manuals and does em on an exchange basis - Send what you've got to him and for a small amount of spondloolies will send you by return a set of manuals ready to fit. PM/email him though he was saying his inbox was quite full from CCT requests. Just search for bazza using the search function to find a post by him.

Don't get confused mate, Bazza converts the Honda auto cct's to manual. The stopper mod, as advocated by AMCQ, is an alteration designed to prevent the plunger retracting if the spring goes on an Auto cct.

Oh I'm with you mate. I didn't realise Bazza converted them to manual thanks for that!
If I went with the stopper mod option, and in time one of the Cct's failed, would it save the engine from the serious damage that would normally happen?
With the stopper mod in place, if one failed would I know it had gone by the sound?

You are locking the plunger part of the CCT in it's used position, this is important as you need to know this to be able to workout the length of the stopper. It's no good just removing the CCT and allowing the plunger to fully extend for this mod![]()

Providing the valve timing is already set as it should be (I.E. the bike has been running correctly), once you have the rear cylinder set at TDC on the compression stroke, all the appropriate marks lined up with the cam lobes facing the right way, we know by turning the engine over the required amount (as stated in my instructions) and lining up the FT mark with the mark on the alternator cover the front cylinder valve timing will be correctly set for removing and refitting the front CCT. You only need to remove the front cam cover for manual CCT's if you want to check the recommended amount of deflection between the cam wheels.

That's not to critical. I used aluminium, but others have used mild steel.

Thats the whole idea of the stopper mod. It takes away the guess work of setting the correct tension on a manual tensioner, but safe guards the engine from any damage happeniong to it in the event of a CCT failure. Scott, where are you based?
The stopper mod is easy to do, but if you need help try and get to a workshop day and get someone to give advice so you don't need to worry about cocking it up.
