Tips for figuring out whats happened

Post by griffo117 »

Evening all
I got a storm(extra 1) real cheap due to the engine blowing up (and i have a spare motor) which ccts went in it
My question is when we took the sump off the blown motor we found flat metal pieces about 1cm in width and varying sizes up to say 4cm long and paper thin(sorry dont have pics)engine is truly seized and my mate who is pretty savy on bikes reckons the blokes been doing prolonged wheelies which has starved the engine of oil and seized it
He says its the bottom end bearing and im pretty sure hes right so opinions would help heaps all
Also the heads look good so is a straight head swap ok from the seized to the cct motor?????
All help and tips appreciated ill post pics when i can
For a 98 model apart from the engine shes in really good nick and yes she is black (thinking of painting her yellow so i dont get confused with my other yellow beauty)

Sounds like mains and/or big end bearing shells disintegrating.

Suggest you strip the blown motor, and have a look inside.
Chances are there will be damage to the crank.

But if the cct's went in that motor you have a potential problem with the heads as well, so all you can do is pull it apart and inspect.

If the cct's fail on an engine, as long as the valves are just bent and not snapped you can usually just swap heads over, bear in mind that the piston has been trying to punch the bent valve through the head every time it comes up and so there is going to be a lot of strain on the bottom end bearings.

Prolonged wheelies tend to wear the front bore more than bottom end bearings, in my experience.
The oil pickup is in the sump, and so even with the bike at an angle the oil still drops down sufficiently.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Before fitting those heads, blow compressed air through all of the oil galleys.

Those bits of shell get everywhere.
