I have my doubts about 2 things regarding Hitler. The first that he had as much support of his population, I really think more than we realise probably didnt want the war, but their vioces werent heard. The second is that I bet even most of his army weren't aware of the death camps like Auschwitz. The Germans weren't all animals, but the few that were had control of the masses.

Just remember that Hitler was a megalomaniac, pure and simple. Forget genius, great orator etc. That is an irrelevance. Facts;
The Treaty of Versailles was probably unfair to the German people living in Sudentanland and the occupied Rhineland, but is was accepted by the government as war reparation after WW1. It was probably a let off, as Germany (by far and away) were the most destructive force in Europe. If they triumphed in WW1, the result would also have been occupied Europe, left with no choice in it.
Hitler lied, lied and lied again to his own people. Along with the British, French, Russians, Italians and Poles. He assured one and all that a non-aggression policy was the the forefront. That all the arms build up was to kick start his economy. This is despite these actions being against former treaties. More fool Chamberlain!
Not only did Hitler seek to exterminate the Jews, he sought to exterminate every Jew on the planet. Think about that? This was along with all Gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally handicapped amonst many other groups....he went a long way towards acheving it. To cap it all, if Hitlers campaign in Russia was more successful, he intended to wipe all Slavs off the planet. He saw them as im-pure, just above Jews. That could have been tens of millions more murdered.
Hitler deserves no credit whatsoever as a great stesman, leader, motivator etc. He was simply a criminal, one of the worst ever. No more, no less. A real piece of filth.
As for the German people not having any knowledge of the holocaust, a huge number of them did. The dissapearence of Jews was noticed. The smell from the ovens was. The stories of the relatives working at these places was. The very fact that almost the entire German population were guilty of complicities is at least enough to shame all those who did nothing to stop this madness.
If Hitler was British, he would have never got as far as he did. We have never had such a vile leader in our history, no-one that even begins to compare.
Better have history written by the rightful winners than the murderous ones.

I honestly think that if they knew that innocent Jews were being taken to the gas chambers, most ordinard Germans would have been as horrified as the rest of the world, thats all. They might not have particularly liked them, but I doubt they would've condoned mass execution.

Lord Kitchener was commander in chief of the Boer War (was best known for his famous recruitment posters bearing his heavily moustachioed face and pointing hand over the legend, "Your country needs you") - Churchill was a young junior officer at the time.
