Stopper mod question(again)

Sorry guys

Been looking through the old posts about this as I'm convinced now I need to get it done even with my lowly 4k miles on the beast.
Question is, should I replace the stock ccts for new ones(and mod them)or just do the modify the old ones as they only have 4k on them?
This is going to be a big job for a non-mechanic like me so want to avoid having to re-visit them problem for a while if I can.
Will it make any difference?
Any advice appreciated

Hi, Mike.
The problem is one where the spring inside the cct rots through- it's steel and condensation collects in the upper parts of the engine as it cools, and gradually eats away at the spring.
It's the front one that goes, mostly, as that one sits above the engine and pokes upwards, and so no oil flows into it.
The rear one is always full of oil as it pokes downwards, and suffers from this much less.
So the mileage isn't the factor here- it's the age of the spring.

It costs nothing to do the stopper mod, and so it's worth doing.
But when you pull the cct's out you can turn the spring using a small screwdriver, and if one feels weak compared to the other then it's a good sign that the spring is on its way out.
If so, buy new ones and convert or get manuals.

If you're not sure what you're doing, why not ask for someone who's played with these before to drop in and give you a hand, or a bit of guidance?

The age of them was my worry, mines at 1998 model so they getting on a bit!! I'm based in minster on the isle of Sheppy.

Tony very kindly did mine a couple of weeks back, I highly recommend his services.
Otherwise, if you wanted to do it yourself, I'll happily pop round and try to recall Tony's words of wisdom from when he did mine but I would be of very limited help quite honestly.

Hi Chris

Saw the Grainstorm thread but was hoping to get it done before then tbh as I'm scared to ride it now I been on here!!
Like I say I'm not a mechanic at all(not even got many tools or a manual) so was going to have a look at it with the old man tbh.
Begrudge putting into Sittingbourne Service Station and paying a fortune(even though they are very good and helpful).
Think I spoke to Tony about it before but was going to go manuals then.

Totally understand Mike, I wanted mine done ASAP as it's such a big unknown.
Good luck with it and, as I say, I can thoroughly recommend Tony's services, what he charges is laughably cheap for the time he puts in plus you get the benefit of his experienced eye cast around your bike.

Watching Tony do mine, it's not a big job for someone reasonably competent but it was way beyond my means, especially on something so critical but if your Dad knows his stuff you should be fine

By the way, if you want to cover my mileage costs I'll just come to you and fit manuals- stopper mod's a bit more tricky as ideally I'd use a vice, but I could always mount one on a workmate, I suppose....
