silicone sealant

Post by boz »

Got oil leaking from my rear manual CCT I fitted last week. I've read the threads relating to fixing this and know what to do.

What I would like though is a recommendation for the best sealant to use. I've no experience of using this stuff. Is loctite thread lock the best for the job or is there a better product out there?

ps was reading a thread about this on another forum and a guy said he used a Pritt Stick!!!!!!

Thanks ya'll

Boz I used Loctite on mine at the time of fitting and have had no problems at all. I know Tony has advised silicone sealer to some members, so I don't think there is a problem with either.

I used liquid gasket seal when fitting mine, saved me scraping off old paper gasket and replacing with new. I also put a smidgen along the thread. I used a non hardening and remains flexible sealer.

Is it leaking from the thread area or is it the joint surfaces Boz? Just wondering if you are going to have to loosen/remove the complete CCT or not.

I didn't consider leakage from the body where it mates with the head. I used paper gaskets there and Loctite on the thread. Well done Carl, looking at the bigger picture.

You may have to set the timing to RT then loosen the tensioner right off, then apply the sealant/threadlock whatever along the thread, and then tighten back up. If it was me I would remove the rear rocker cover as it's quick and easy to do so, and then check the tension. But you may be able to get away with it without removing, by counting the turns out to unwind the cct. You may want to put a blob of tipex/paint on one side of the bolt to help keep count. You could then screw it back in the same amount.

Cheers Carl. I've already stripped it down as if I'm fitting the CCT's for the first time....don't want to take any chances. Have to change the plugs at the same time anyway. I'm putting gaskets on both the CCT's and going to thread lock them both....when I checked the front one the lock nut was already loose a wee bit. I have though counted the threads on them both as the tension seemed to set just right when I originally put them in
