Battery/Ignition problem??

Post by DaveE »

Hi All,
My first post here.
I bought a vtr 1000 ('98) a few weeks back, getting used to it over the last few weekends... immensely different from my last bike, a transalp.
I was out for a spin today c 100miles, topped up with fuel and about 10miles later the following happened:
1. Rev counter dropped to 0
2. Speedo and odomeder starting losing power intermittently
3. Engine sounded a bit rough....like running out of fuel

I pulled over, switched off the ignition and when I went to restart all was dead...as though no battery

A good samaritan from across the road came to help.
We tried to push start it ....but the big v twin just locked up the rear wheel
We checked fuses -ok
I gave the horn a blip and could hear it very faintly.

My good samaritan suggested the battery may not have been charging so we jump started the bike.
As soon as we connected the leads, odometer , lights etc came on and I could start the bike.
As soon as we disconnected the leads, Rev counter went to zero as per above and the bike bike would cut out when i lowered the revs to idle.
I made made it home by keeping the revs up but with no instruments as soon as I lowered the revs to idel into my driveway, it ut out straight away...dead as a dodo again.

Have any of you any ideas what could be causing this??
THanks for any help, and big thanks to Mart, the guy who helped me out.
Cheers
Dave

Have a look under the right side cover beneath the seat and check out the Reg/rec. Sounds like it may have gone pop mate. Welcome to the forum by the way.

Thanks Kev. I went to charge the battery and found the +ve connection was loose....I'm hoping that may have something to do with it. I'm charging the battery at the moment.
Any ideas how to test the function of the reg/rec?

Have a read up here mate http://vtr1000f.wickidnet.com/ You will need a multimeter for testing. Hopefully it just that loose connection. But as said earlier this is classic RR failure symptoms. When they fail they have a nasty habit of taking out the battery with them.

Have Fun.

Reg/Rec failure can result in an output voltage of zero, or an output voltage of 35-40+ volts, so hopefully if it's not just the loose terminal you'll have one that failed to zero.
If so it's probable that the battery will be ok.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

if you need one I've got my old original - plug in and see, don't suppose it's worth anything and it's just kicking around, might tide you over.

Had a similar problem not quite as drastic.
Turned out to be a corroded earth connector on the R/R. Cleaned all the crud off gave it some electrical lube & been fine since.
