Front sprocket retainer bolt sheered off

Post by jmpower1974 »

Hi All,

my bike is phaarked. The bolt that holds the front sprocket on came lose the other day and I over tightened it too much - it snapped off. Ive attempted drilling a hole to put in an easy out but I cant get the easy out to bite at all. Im at a loss as to what to do. Any advice greatly appreciated.

bash it i with a hammer. it will bite.
dont use one too small though or it might break - and good luck drilling the extractor out lol
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

This one might be tricky.

Try to get the easy-out to bite, and remove the snapped-off bolt that way, but if not you have two main options:
1. Drill out oversize, tap the shaft in situ and fit an oversize bolt- (the next size up English thread might be better than going for M10) This is only an option if the shaft is case-hardened only, rather than hardened throughout. Or
2. Remove engine, change shaft over.
I have spare shafts if needed.

The only other solution would be to have it spark-eroded, but I think that the shaft would have to be removed to carry this out.

I guess you could weld a new sprocket on and sell the bike quickly, but I'd be coming back to see you if I was the unlucky buyer....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
