8mm inline fuel filter

I have just brought two inline filters (plastic / paper) with diameter 6mm to 8mm. I know the I.D. of the fuel pipe is 10mm, will the pipe contract down to the 8mm and will it restrict the fuel flow being smaller I.D. to a point where performance is restricted?

Had a rust problem with the tank which hopefully has been sealed with Petseal but just in case. Have not yet cut into pipe.

Try removing the lines from the carb end, fitting the filters and measuring how fast the fuel flows out. How quickly will the tank empty form full?

Then work out how quickly you can empty a tank by riding hard.

Now compare the two, and as long as you have a decent safety margin (I'd suggest with filters flowing fuel twice as fast as you can empty the tank by using fuel in the carbs) you'll be fine.

I think your best bet is to just try it and see, but I would have thought you would be OK. After all it's only the filters that are 8mm which will give you a slight venturi effect as it passes through and return to normal as it comes out the other end

Well, Carl, what is the short answer?
The flow rate will lessen as the filter gradually clogs with use, which is why I wouldn't recommend fitting an inline filter unless you have repeated issues with particles blocking jets.
Even then, it's better to clean or re-seal the tank, or replace the fuel lines, rather than just fit a filter.
Causes and symptoms.
The filter becomes one more thing which can give problems and stop the bike running properly.

I've never measured the flow rates and so don't know how marginal the flow rates are with restrictions at 6mm ID's.

I have however, fitted 8mm ID quick connects, and haven't had any problems with fuel flow.
Dunno about 6mm ID, though.

Maybe not such a good idea then. I suppose Honda left them off for a reason. but isn't there a gauze type filter in the petcock, so there should be no need for inline filters.

They might be fine, but to be sure I'd suggest testing the flow rates, and then either changing them regularly as part of regular maintenance or cleaning them out if that's possible.
Swapping them out whenever you change plugs sounds about right.

Petseal is the worst stuff i have ever used.

Never would i seal a tank again with that sh1t....

After a 6 months it started to come away from the tank! in to the carbs and stuff. Am not the only one who this has had it done to

Interesting but a bit late now I'm afraid. Did you use Petseal Ultra? If it doesn't work I will convert to a 19ltr tank I think. What did you have to do in the end?

Good luck trying to find one. Oh and just so you know, you can't get them in the states either as they did not supply the larger tank over there.
