welcome to the Club Neil, hope you enjoy the bike. have good read in the workshop knowledge section and make sure you sort the CCTs when you are sorting the bike out.
also worth putting your location in your user information so you can perhaps get some help from anyone local.

Have a good read through the workshop knowledge base plenty of food for thought there. And yes CCT's should be checked also the regulator Rectifier should be changed for the finned type.

CCT's can go at any time, it's a gamble!
You can either go for the stop mod http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=19416 Which is the Honda auto CCT's that are converted to a fail safe. So when it does fail, it don't send the valves crashing.
Or
You go for the full manual conversion, your options are here http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720
Then with regards to fitting View Topic View Topic http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326
To see if it has been done have a look at the CCT's on bike. Is there a thread coming out the end with a locknut. If so then manuals are installed.
Regulator rectifier you will find attached to the subframe just behind the tail panel on the right hand side near the battery.

Hi, welcome. I am new too but already people here have been incredibly helpful. I will try and give back where I can so just ask and people will do there best. The bike seems to be very reliable but as said the main two things that need doing are changing the cam chain adjusters to manual ones and changing the regulator/rectifier to a finned one to dissipate heat better.

Thanks for the welcoming, changed my location, Hemel Hempstead...
I have only just got the bike and havent even ridden it yet as it had been down the road, all the normal damage, Brake Lever, Rear Foot Lever, Clutch Cover and Basket, indicators, fairing scratched etc etc...Not too bad really. The bike was given to me so it has only cost me a couple of hundred ponds so far, so a real bargain if i can get it back on the road soon...
Originally I was going to just get the bike back on the road and sell it to get a crosser, but after discovering this website, i am now leaning towards keeping it as it hasnt cost me that much so far.
Only been on this site for a few days but the mods and memebers bikes are getting me the buzz again and making my mind work overtime with how far to go with it...
Took the sump off the other night as need to check for bits of clutch basket (there was only stones fromt he road) and had a good look underneath inside the bottom end, looks really clean in there, hopefully a good sign?
The bike has done about 25000 miles so not sure if the CCT's have been done and the friend that gave me the bike wouldnt know either, how can i tell or know if they need doing?
Or should i just do them anyway just incase???
The only part to actually get the bike running that i cant find cheap is the Clutch Cover, Honda want £240 plus VAT and they are like rocking horse on ebay!!! I might bite the bullet on this but is there anywhere that you guys know i could get one from and i see a few Carbon Cover Protectors on some members bikes, are these available anywhere???

Sounds like you have caught the bug and that's without riding it. you will have double the bug then

Just keep your eye out on ebay for the casings, they do come up from time to time. Carbon Cover Protectors can be bought from a German firm. I haven't got the link right now but I'm sure someone will post it up, or do a search and you will find a reference to them somewhere on here.

The clutch cover is one of the bits that gets damaged too easy so the 2nd hand ones are very rare, or also damaged. but one option is to get one with only mild damage, repair it [if it is holed] and then stick the carbon cover over it. costs way less than the new one and will protect the engine if the bike gets dropped again

I'm after a clutch cover as well as I fancy having a go at putting a window in it like this one.
