Engine sound on tickover opinion after CCT change

Post by alternative_vtr »

Hi, just been on a ride for the first time after fitting my manual cam chain tensioners and the engine sounds fine but with a slight ticking (can't remember if much different to before) I have recorded a little video of it and put it on youtube. Would just appreciate other opinions? Starts ok, no screeching noises and only sounds that I can hear riding it are V-twin noises. If anything it's the front CCT that may be ticking but only very slightly if it is at all (might be in my head)

I loctited the cct's in well so really can't be wombled to take the tank off, airbox etc etc to adjust the front one unless it is necessary

Thanks in advance :)

It sounds pretty good to me as well, it doesn't sound like the front CCT is too loose,

Thanks, it does sound a little more ticky (in the flesh) but not much so I shall stop wittleing and ride, well as soon as I get rid of the 13 year old tyres that is 8O fitting some Michelin Pilot road 3's soon, they seem to be the best tyre for me.

That sounds fine to me as well just like mine sounds. Only query I have is the tickover speed I noticed your choke was fully in & it sounds alot faster than mine. Incidently what is the correct rpm at idle???

Iirc it's around 1100 to 1200rpm, but due to some owners getting the spit back through the carbs now and again they set them slightly higher (1200 to 1400rpm) which helps to minimise this.

I have my tickover at aroun 900 rpm. Never cuts out/carb farts etc either. I hate the faster tickover as she runs on too fast at tickover at junctions.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Presume then its all down to personal preference 900-1200 all depending how well the carbs are balanced in the first place.

And how you ride. The higher tickover is really helpful when downchanging at higher revs in slippery conditions, because the revs are higher the engine doesn't have as much back pressure, meaning less chance of locking the rear, even momentarily, entering a turn.

Same effect as an air bleed system.

Also it spins up quicker when you launch.

Re your engine sound, it's common to get so used to the way your bike sounds that you don't really notice it. After all, most engine sounds, bearings wearing, valve clearances increasing, cam chains slapping a bit more, etc, come on gradually.

But when you change the cct's you suddenly pay attention, and notice all sorts of things....

I'd recommend you just ride it for a month, to get used to it again.

Then try adjusting each cct one flat tighter, to see (hear, actually) if the ticking decreases. If not, turn it back to where it was.

Chances are that in a month you won't b hearing anything out of the ordinary.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks, I am pretty convinced that I have them adjusted about right.
