Rear brake drag.

Post by Diabolus »

Over last few weeks I've noticed the rear brake dragging slightly, the pads are low but still have a bit of life left the piston is far out but pushes back in easily enough ??? Any tips or is it time for an overhaul ??

Check the caliper slider pins and sleeves etc. are all clean, free of corrosion & nicely lubed up, and if it keeps sticking then consider a piston seal set refurb

Try removing the rear caliper (pivot it out of the way) and then see if the drag is still there.

If so, it's bearings, seals, chain/sprocket or some other part of the back end.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I went to replace the rear pads today ,5 min job  oh no ,the pin plug was siezed so had to drill it and use an extractor to remove it.

Which then needed the can removing for better access, the exhaust strap bolt was bent and i stripped the threads on the bolt undoing it and on closer inspection the rubber shroud on the larger of the two pivot bolts for the caliper mount was split and the bolt was badly corroded not alowing the caliper to slide during opperation.

so that explains my slight drag on the disc and now need three parts to complete ' the 5 min job'

That was a blast from the past - I recommend stainless plug screws like the pic below with some copper grease.

or as this tip using a suitable allen headed derailluer bolt

Wet&dry the slide smooth for the brake and get a new rubber shroud and grease up before reassembly.

Is that on the sleeve? (part no 12 in the fiche)

IIRC I used a bit of fine wet&dry wrapped on small paintbrush handle and twisted with a bit of WD-40 - though you could finger-twizzle a suitably sized drill bit to clean it out
