Ticking

Post by Benno_0214 »

Hey everyone.

So the other week I completed the 'stopper mod' as I was getting concerned about the cct issue with these bikes, thought I'd get it done for peace of mind.
Lets just say a fairly straightforward procedure took a little longer than planned (issues removing pin on one of the CCTs :eek2 )
Anyway i got it all back together in the end and after some problems with remembering which way the hoses went on the fuel tap and which way was on/off with the tap I got her up and running.

However today a 'ticking' noise has started in the engine and although the bike is still running ok it's a little concerning. I switched the bike off when I got home and decided to wheel her in the garage to try and pinpoint the noise. However when I started the bike it was running quiet again. I'm wondering if something went wrong with one of the CCTs or if this noise is just a coincence?!

Also another quick question: how much play is acceptable in a wheel bearing? If any? Noticed a small amount of play when I had her on the paddock stand.

Cheers Ben

Providing you carried out the stopper mod as described in the Workshop Knowledgebase, I doubt the ticking noise is anything serious seeing as it disappeared when you went to investigate. I would keep an eye on it and see how it goes, or rather an ear
As for wheel bearings, any play in them means they are on their way out and should be replaced with new. They're not that expensive if you do the job yourself. Part numbers here:-

The ticking has come back! It sounds like its coming from the front cylinder (the one I had the trouble getting the roll pin out of :eek2)
I'm wondering if I've damaged the cct now and should I replace it just to be cautious? Are the front and rear CCTs the same or specific front and rear? I've seen one on eBay which I could do the stopper mod on but it doesn't say if its front or rear?
Cheers for your help!

They are the same F & R - If you're having to go into the engine once again why not replace both with manual CCTs and be done with it
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

If the wheel bearing is on it's way out change it beforeit totally goes, mine fell apart when I tried to knock it out leaving only the outer in the wheel. It was difficult to remove.

Just finished changing both front and rear wheel bearings, the front ones were ok, changed them anyway, one of the rear bearings had a fair bit of play.
The bike is making the ticking noise even when it's stood idling, if I had race cans you wouldn't even hear it! I think it's probably nothing to worry about its just its started a week or so after the stopper mod :? !
I had problems taking the roll pin out of the front cct which makes me wonder if I've now damaged it)
I've ordered a new cct which I will perform the stopper mod on the weekend to replace the bashed about one. Hopefully it might cure the ticking.

I think it's best to fit a new one rather than secondhand as you was considering. On the old cct currently on the bike, the spring may have been on it's last legs anyway and by moving it when locking it off may have just pushed it over the edge a bit, Hence the slight ticking. It may be a blessing in disguise and you have done the stopper just in time.

I was kind of thinking that maybe it had packed in and now just relying on the piece of 8mm steel I put in! I wonder if the ticking is the plunger now tapping back on the 0.5mm play between the stopper and bottom of the hole?! :?
As soon as the new cct arrives I will investigate and post up my findings!

It could be the beginnings of that if the spring was weak to begin with. I have never heard what a failed cct with stopper sounds like but I would guess it would be louder than a light ticking. I would have thought it would be a loud chain rattle to the point of you stopping and considering whether to continue riding the bike or not. The whole point of the stopper is that it allows the cct to fail as there is no other option with the autos, but not to the point where the chain can either slip teeth of jump off the cog completely and cause any damage.

Don't forget to make a complete new stopper bar for the new one as it will be a different length needed. What did you use to remove the roll pin. I cant understand why it was so hard to remove. It's usually getting it back in that proves a bit tricky and fiddly.

Nope, it's trying to find it after it's shot out and rolled under the workbench in all the dust, spider's webs and old filing and drilling swarf......
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I used a 3mm punch, the best tool for the job really. I don't know why it wouldn't come out! I build grease and oil pumps for a living and I'm punching out roll pins almost daily..... The roll pin wasn't fit to reuse when I did it so it was replaced with a new one.
I'm not going to ride the bike now until I've got the new cct in and sorted.

OK so it wasn't user error then  It must have been well jammed in there. Still, a new should hopefully sort you out good and proper.
