I Upgraded My Network/Router

Post by VTRDark »

In case you all wondering where I have been today  yesterday  I have been messing around with a new router I have got.

I've upgraded to a Netgear N900 WNDR4500 Dual Band
http://support.netgear.com/product/WNDR4500

So far I am very impressed loving the dual wireless signals and being able to flick between the two. So with the two wireless signals I came up with new names for the networks, Marconi and Jackson :biggrin (I thought that was relevant) It has significantly increased my browsing speed and it has some features my old modem/router (DG834N) did ot have, like a built in NAS via USB 3. Next on my list will be a USB 3 external drive so I can use that facility to it's full potential. :D

I have used an old DG834v3
http://support.netgear.com/product/DG834v3

Set up as a gateway set to Modem use only. This was something I was unaware of it being able to do, so lessen learned there. :D Found a useful PDF with instructions on setting this up (DG834_Tips100.pdf)
http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=6072

Here's a direct download link so no registering required. It may be handy for someone.
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... 7550,d.d2k

The only thing with the N900 I'm a bit mythed about is, there seems to be a lack of a firewall. Maybe it's tucked away hidden in the control panel somewhere and I just haven't found it. :confused

Still got to set up static IP's for all the nodes in my house which should be fun. But then I will have remote access. I may even set up a VPN but this is something I have little experience with so will be a learning curve.

Now I have super signal strength my neighbours can go and get fooked.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. I was up all night and fell asleep at 10 this morning. When I work on my computer I sometimes find I work better at night. My sleeping pattern is all other the place at the mo. I was hoping to get an early night tonight and knock it back around again as I only got two hours kip today. It's 1 o clock already :eek2 Got some reading up to do on TCP IP so maybe that will knock me out.

Signed up to the Readyshare earlier on. I also got it set up directly across the LAN.

I also found out that the firewall setting is not a firewall as such, but more of a filtration system. Keyword Blocking of HTTP Traffic and Block Services (Port Filtering).

Sounds like a very nice bike, clean and untouched with low mileage. Perfect.

Hi.... On return from the white rose county all I can say
whist in a state of suspended animation and expectancy I am still
in a high degree of rumination about what to do next and still chewing
the cud ..mmmmm. . Like the bike could be bit small for me
but Im 6.0 heavish build... butt felt adequate on seat sat on more
comfier machines but supported ok enough :p

Dealer well....He's thrown a new back tyre in ,12 mths Mot,HPI cert
transport by van Free... to my place 55 miles away and sorted with tools
under seat.... two small eeny weeny paint scrapes on it... HE FOUND THEM ..They were
invisible to my peepers said he'd do a CCT for 70 squid .. but it didnt need one
AND 3 months dealers warranty. Still walked out and left it despite i  t firing up at will
on the button...no ear wax treatment out of the Honda silencers. Very quiet I thought.

Reason I walked off...need to measure my internal garage to see if I can squeeze it
in.... :problem: so havin a good  2 night
sleep on it .

said he'd do a CCT for 70 squid
Presumably that's for a OEM CCT? If so I hope he's paying you £70 to dispose of it down a deep mine shaft :p - Money would be better spent on getting manual CCTs like Mark Krieger's (klx678 > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720 - as CCTs have been know to go on bikes with milage as low as 7k.

Not for BSM :p and YETI is 6ft and some more yet he has two Firestorms.
buy a SV1000 instead
"One of the downsides of owning an SV is that you have to really keep on top of the cleaning or it just rusts before your eyes"

"Or alternatively, there's always a Honda... Although I don't like to admit it (much) they do seem to be more 'winter-resistant'."

More like 7ft

Follow the instructions here on the forum, I'm not sure about the You Tube thingy but don't follow a Haynes manual as it has detrimental mistakes in it with regards to timing.

You can either go for the stop mod http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=19416
Which is the Honda auto CCT's that are converted to a fail safe. So when it does fail, it don't send the valves crashing.

Or

You go for the full manual conversion, your options are here
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720

Then with regards to fitting View Topic
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326

Firestorms are great bikes you can't go far wrong with them. Once the CCT's are done your good to go.

Thanx for your little gem ..top draw .. :) and something to be
really aware of....

Two questions .... 1. Hey do you know of anyone around me handy
with spanners and would do the CCT.s .. financial rewards most
applicable.. The area say would be 35 miles around the epicentre
being Haydock Park Racecourse..North West . :?

2. Am I being over paranoid about CCT's on a VTR.. looked after with
K9.5 on the clock :wtf:

Finally I heard about the finish on Suzies before so thats good advice as well
bud.

I don't know anyone in your area, but now you have posted, someone else will speak up from around you neck of the woods.

As for being paranoid, the standard Hona auto CCT's are a known fault and have been known to fail on bikes with extremely low mileage. For the small cost and peace of mind they are defiantly worth doing. If one fails and bends valves or worse your looking at a lot more expense.
