Thinking of painting some bits

Post by VTRPiG »

Hey guys thinking of painting my subframe, exhaust hangers and belly pan. Question is would spray paint in a rattle can be ok for the job and would I need a primar? It only needs to tidy things up a bit and doesn't need to be a perfect job. Anything would be better than it already is lol

Cheers in advance

tbh you will need to prime the surface so the paint can stick whether that with primer or keying the top coat .
smoothright satin black is a good hard wearing paint for the subframe .
but any paint wont stick or dry in these temperatures .

Subframe: You'll need to neutralise any rust first in the nooks and crannies with http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165594 then some etchprimer before finishing or just use some hammerite slap.

Exhaust hangers: Similar to above (but no rust removal req.)

Belly pan: Lightly wet&dry, flexible plastic primer spray, and then finish & lacquer.

As mentioned unless you have a nice heated space to work in, it's not the best time of year for spray painting - best wait till spring.

i've painted subframes and main frames, i've used hammerite smooth satin black rattle cans, you don't need to etch prime, but you get better results giving the surface a light keying with some 600 grit, i've been well pleased with the results, i would stick what ever you paint in front of a heater to help cure the paint. i've also painted cam covers, exhaust hangers, top and bottom yokes, front subframe, when you do the rear subframe pay a fair bit of attention to the bar that runs across nearest the battery, it gets most of the road salt and rust, give it a good rub down, maybe some rust treatment before spraying, i also wrapped the bar in vinyl wrap for extra protection....

Just take a length of garden hose, slit it lengthways and clip over the bar once painted.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Any bare ally needs Etch priming first. If using Hammerite use their primer. For superior strength use a two pack epoxy based system with a separate hardener in the can. Some of them have a widget in the base of the can that when you hit releases and activates a hardener into the paint. The whole can needs to be used once activated. Or just get them Powdercoated

Seriously - Don't spray paint with your missus around in an enclosed space as fumes esp for acid etchprimer can be nasty.

very  wicky
I can vouch that using acid etch indoors even with a mask made me feel  as a dog, but had to do it in workshop/utility room/lean to heated up to 16c+
The overspray hangs in the air too , a grey dust covers everything.

It's underneath, you can't see it unless you fall off. You could use clear or black plastic tube, I suppose.
But if you have fun stripping and repainting your subframe every year.....

If you run a hugger it stops the problem anyway, for the most part. The crud thrown up by the rear tyre acts as a very effective shotblaster on that part of the subby.

I've always used sperex tough black on forks, frames etc. now called simoniz tough black, its a paint for anti roll bars etc and very tough! i can highly recommend it. Just prep well first and then get a good coat or two on and it looks the business and last very well too. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-Simoniz-L ... 460a4a2bd7

Hey guys sorry for late reply been a hectic few weeks and baby only about a week away from saying hellooo to the world :eek2

Thank you all for all the great advice. Wicky made a good point about the paint fumes and decided to hold of on the paint job. Although I am even keener to do the paint work now that I have all your advice at hand. Hopefully during the summer I'll get a chance to get it done.

Had my first ride of the year yesterday, great ride and THE SUN WAS ACTUALLY SHINNING UP HERE, north of the border :D . Unfortunately I snapped my left mirror off when I took the bike out the shed :sad2 :sad2
