First time ever the bike has stopped working

Post by Flatline »

After 15 years of ownership the bike broke down today

Was on a ride out with Ady to have a look at the first part of the Yorkshire Ride out

Bike was running ok but then:

Stops running on rearr cylinder

(unburnt fuel smell from lh exhaust)

Got progressively worse

Spluttering along at 45, would start to pick up on/off/on/off and then go back onto one cylinder, a few backfires

Then is spluttered to a complete stop and refused to re start (now started on one cylinder)

Your guidance will be appreciated

Check that sparkplug cap is firmly snapped onto plug

Check that water hasn't filled the recess where the plug screws down into esp the front one

Coils?

Having just had a look at the coils, and how easy they are to remove etc I have a thought

One of my friends has a repair garage

Presumably he will have a bit of electronic wizardry that can tell if a coil is working or not

Seems like a plan to load the bike on the van and get over to his place to check

Rather than stripping them all out before

Switch the coils around - so if the problem moves then you've narrowed it down.

Yep, Tony suggested that

Just thought I could take it to garage and get them checked instead of stripping everything down only to find its something else

Swapping coils over is a good idea mate as things cam alter when revved and under load compared to a static meter test alone,if you fancy doing stick coil mod I'll go halves with ya ,after 13yrs coils are probably a bit tired.not unlike meself.

Hi mate, that's not good news.

Firstly, you can check the coils very easily yourself with an ohm meter. If you look in the PDF manual, there are details on what the resistances should be across the lead and the coil.

Also check the plug cap is connected properly, and that the plug is in properly. You will need to take off the tank to get to the rear one. Take the plug out and check for signs of damage. Try swapping front and back plugs maybe?

If none of those fix the problem, then you need to look at either fuel or air to the back cylinder I guess. Check the carbs to make sure there is nothing obviously wrong.
