Flat spot!!!

Post by Matty1986 »

Hi everyone :)

I'm new too the site I have a 1999 firestorm (I love the bike by the way) and the thing is Ive had a flat spot since ive had it. when I pull away from the lights a bit quick sometimes it chokes up and kangaroos down the road into I shut off and then accelerate again but very gently. I've only ever changed the spark plugs and oil + oil filter. The bike has been dyno jetted and I have the old jets and the box and the k&n instructions that come with it. (The old owner had it jetted not me by the way) Some one told me it could just need the carb screws being adjusted slightly? I thought I would ark first before I make it worse or before I put it in the garage and spend aload of ££££££ on it.

Thanks for reading and appreciate any help you can give me.

Greetings - when was it dynoed? Have you a copy of the printout and why didn't they sort out the flat spot... admittedly the K&N is tricky to tune for.

When was the K&N last cleaned and reoiled?

I would start with the cheapest options

As wicky said, check the air filter. Make sure it clean and its a K&N.

Does the bike have standard exhausts or aftermarket??

See if you can borrow a carb balancer.

Don't have the print off and I've never had the tank off to see what the filter is or what it's like. I'm gonna take off the tank and have a look at the filter this weekend. The man who I brought it off of said it was done at a very good garage g&h motorcycle in Colchester so i am surprised it has the problem. He could of been lieing tho. I've had the bike about 9 months the last owner had it bout 3 years but only done a 1000 miles I've done bout 2000.

Thanks for the fast response!!

It' very simple to remove the tank but do make a note of where the vacuum line attaches on the petcock. If you have a K&N filter make sure it has the two rubber block off's in the corners of the airbox.

Pop it round mine - pm me for my address in Colchester

GH motorcycles specialise in motocross bikes, so wouldn't expect them to know about litre v-twins :-)

Is your VTR by any chance blue?
