Dead Bike Recovered by AA
Just got in from recovery by AA from Grantham to home. Out enjoying the sun, stopped for a fag break, bike re-started, ran 100 yards and died. No electrics at all, nothing. Battery showing a good 12v, regulator gone?
Any ideas welcome, it's too late now to start stripping it down tonight, but I'll need to tomorrow (other bike also dead with large nail in rear tyre, so bikeless now )

What kind of R/R is fitted? unfinned, later finned or a MOSFET type?
Did you check the main 30amp fuse?

Re: Dead Bike Recovered by AA
It is usually the 30amp fuse that goes when everything goes but why is the important question.
The R\R could be the issue but WIcky has already asked the important questions.
Check all your grounds or earths and that the terminals on the battery are tight.

Re: Dead Bike Recovered by AA
Thanks for the replies...
Main 30A fuse is good. All other fuses good. Nothing blown.
I've pulled off and cleaned all the connectors I can see, and there is no corrosion.
(AA man also did this, and removed the clock module - will I lose my mileage record?)
I've now noticed the ignition lights (oil pressure and side stand) come on very faintly and the horn gives a faint bleep. I'd say this all points to a poor connection but it happened suddenly: bike ok, bike dead. No in between miss-fires etc.
Could this still be the rec/reg?
Not being any good with electrics I'm short on a plan to trace a fault like this.

After 2001 Honda replaced the unfinned version with a finned version.
Slap in this plug'n'play HONDA CBR 125 2004 REG REC CBR125 REGULATOR RECTIFIER
or fit a MOSFET R1 style R/R for better reliability.
You might need a new battery as well as unregulated leccy juice could have damaged the battery.

Re: Dead Bike Recovered by AA
Sadly, I've taken the reg/rec off my Deauville (same beastie) and that made no difference.
I've now stripped the bike to get to every single connector and checked for problems. All look ok. Bike looks a mess.
I've stripped the kill switch and cleaned the contacts.
When you turn on the ignition, the lights glow faintly. When you hit the kill switch they glow bright, but that's all wrong...
I'm beginning to think something has gone wrong in the ECU thingies. I think I need a bike electrician to help me, so if anyone knows anyone near me, let me know,

when you check the battery voltage, what is the battery voltage under load ie push the starter button does the voltage drop ?, i think you will still get dash lights without the cdi boxes attached, but ill check that tomorrow to confirm that.

Re: Dead Bike Recovered by AA
Thanks, I'm going to check this later today. I need to buy a new multimeter, I've been needing one for a while now but keep putting it off due to cost. The REAL bummer is I'm off work this week, just a few bits to do to keep Mrs.J happy and then I'm free to play and I was looking forward to a few days out on the bike.vtrjames wrote:when you check the battery voltage, what is the battery voltage under load ie push the starter button does the voltage drop ?, i think you will still get dash lights without the cdi boxes attached, but ill check that tomorrow to confirm that.
I do need a good colour wiring diagram to start to trace wires - has any one got a link to one, please?
...and my thumbs are sore through pulling connectors apart

hi, just checked and the warning lights do function as normal with control modules disconnected.it does sound like a poor earth somewhere.i know if the earth near the regulator is poor you will get some warning lights but no milage display, you will also find a stray 12vdc in the earth if its bad!!
Re: Dead Bike Recovered by AA
There's a diagram in the Haynes manual or here's a scan http://cl.ly/1T142x0r1N0L
