The way to test the gauge is to remove the push on connector @ the thermostat housing and touch it to ground (earth) and turn on the key.

The gauge should go full hot for analog or flash 270 (I believe) on a digital gauge.

One caution is don't let the gauge sit pegged. Remove to power (either turn the key off or pull the wire) as soon as it checks out as to not damage the gauge.

Check coolant level?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
