i've been putting putoline sport 10w40 (semi) in the GSXR and genuine oil and air filters and NGK Iridium plugs
used Castrol 10w30 (semi) in the VTR with either genuine or champion oil filters from halfords (done research they are decent)

Re: oil and filters
This is one of those topics that can be more personal preference than anything else....
With that, what I use is Mobil 1 4T 10-40. The reason I have settled on this oil (and yes I have tried many different types) is that I get the smoothest shifting and best transmission function with it.
For a filter I run Purolator Pure 1. This filter has been reviewed very well and is a bit bigger than a stock filter. This is why I first pulled the stock chin fairing as it wouldn't fit without some trimming and decided I like how the bike looks without it.
For the final question of when to change the oil. I really don't keep track of the mileage. I know when it is time to change the oil when the shifting starts to get "notchy" or the gearbox does not function smoothly anymore.
This tells me that the long chain polymers have broken down and it's time for fresh oil. This usually happens around 4-6K miles.... sometimes sooner and sometimes a little longer depending on how the bike has been ridden.
Of course YMMV but that is what works for me.

Loud pipes don't save lives, knowing how to ride your bike will save your life.
