Sorry to butt in here but when you say leaks around the joints and clamps does that mean even the smallest of leaks? when i took my standard cans off to clean them i'm sure there was some small gaps under the clamps after i put them back on, didn't think it was a problem at the time, should i sort that out?cybercarl wrote:Have you put standard headers pipes back on, also did you get the broken exhaust stud fixed. IIRC these are standard cans you have fitted and you had a 2 into 1 Viper beforehand. First thing to do is make sure that you don't have any leaks in the exhaust system anywhere, so check all around the joins and clamps, the slightest of leaks will cause backfires. There's also a good chance that the carbs where set up for the 2 into 1 system you had on before, so you may have to make a few changes to your settings.

Did you renew the graphite packing washers ?scouse645 wrote: Sorry to butt in here but when you say leaks around the joints and clamps does that mean even the smallest of leaks? when i took my standard cans off to clean them i'm sure there was some small gaps under the clamps after i put them back on, didn't think it was a problem at the time, should i sort that out?
Did you use new clamps ?
IMO a gap as you describe it ''under the clamp '' is not going to be a problem, however for the best seal it should be flush tight all the way round.

Re: Problems
Thanks for your reply, don't know were the packing washers are, and i didn't use new clamps, think i need to have a look at that as i'm off to the manx a week thursday.
Re: Problems
If it's only the smallest of leaks and it's not causing you any problems then best to leave well alone for now, but if it's blowing it may deteriorate over time with the pressures and cause a bit of popping and banging at a later date. Not only that, but if an exhaust system is not sealed properly then it will have an effect on the smooth running of the engine, Scavenging as the positive and negative pressures on the gases are sucked up and down the exhaust system. When assembling the exhaust it's best to use some heat resistant silicone around inside the joins. Clamps alone don't always seal things. Don't bother with Gun Gum or other exhaust assembly pastes as it will just dry out, crack and fall apart, especially on the V twins.

Amazingly this is cheaper than e-bay...maybe a first for Silvers.
New clamps can be got from Arco a lot cheaper than Silvers or Wemoto.
Use some copper slip on the new gaskets, they come off easier next time.
