Operation Storm II - Pt IV - Wales - Sept 6th-8th 2013
Re: Operation Storm II - Pt IV - Wales - Sept 6th-8th 2013
I'm probably thinking about this now as I nearly got taken out by 2 Harley's tonight. Doing around 70mph inches away from my elbow past me in a 40mph zone while a car passed us on the other side coming the other way. When I caught up with them wobbling to a halt at a railway crossing I felt like getting off my bike a thumping them both, very hard

As long as you have got several more brain cells than Joe Bugner you should be fineJamie in Maureen wrote:+1bazza696 wrote:I will be happy to detour but will wait for the weather on the day and possibly how my butt feels. As long as the slow ride group will be slow![]()
The "slow" group won't be really slow will it?
It's my first time using the marker system officially, but me and my friend operate similar tactics so hopefully I won't get too confused. I don't think the fast group is for me as my 'fast' might be a lot slower than your 'fast'.
I could always move into that group next year, if I feel the need, the need for....?

I really wouldn't worry about the fast group being too 'fast'. The marker system makes sure no one gets lost, if you ride slower than the guy in front, so what, there will be someone waiting at the next junction for you.Jamie in Colchester wrote:Ok brill cheers, i don't want anyone to think I'm hoping to go stupid and ride on the edge, just didn't want to sit behind cars when a (sensible) overtake is possible.
I do ride very sensibly, there's too much to lose, and watching a lot of supposedly "fast" riders makes my blood boil when you see their road craft, or lack of! I'm sure everyone here will have the head screwed on. I think the leisurely group will be perfect
If you like to ride and are confident overtaking cars at speed, then the fast group is for you. If you don't mind sitting in traffic waiting for someone to take a car sized gap for an overtake and taking it easy, then the second group is for you.
The fast group won't be riding like Richard in general, everyone takes it at their own pace.
I found the main difference will be that in the second group, you have a much higher chance of getting behind someone that will ride much more cautiously than you want to and it gets boring. Since you aren't supposed to be overtaking each other with the marker system, you may end up being behind a load of 50mph cars on a really nice stretch of road and not being able to get past because the person in front doesn't go.
In the 1st group you will generally be able to keep up with the others (except Alistair

Guys I really don't wont to say this
but I got to pull out
I've been thinking about this the last few days and looking at the bike and what needs doing. I just don't think it's in a roadworthy state for doing Wales. Gutted.... I'm going to have to knuckle down, spend some money and do some maintenance and bit of TLC.
I'm really sorry guys. And now I got to get the bike sorted for the London rideout.....build another Storm. FFS i'm under pressure and not enough hours in the day.

I want to but I'm going to have to spend the money on the bike. It's either the bike or Wales
and Winter will creep up quick enough.
No........ I got to get it done
Chain and Sprockets, Oil and filter, I got the mori pipes to fit and work out the madrels and cutting for links, re-pack cans (I'm starting to go deaf
) Brakes are not that good either
going to have to upgrade them before Winter. I've got the rear shock to do, then all my suspension sag can be set up properly. And a load of other things I could add to the list.

Miztaziggy - you've got me tempted by fast group now!
Carl, sounds like you've got your work cut out, I've got a chain & sprockets you can have, they're worn but should be enough life left for Wales.... Free postage to you if it helps sway your decision!

Seriously though it's a hard decision as I was looking forward to this. Wales has a place in my Heart as i'm 1/2 Welsh. I was hoping to pop in on some Family while in the neck of the woods as well.
That's a very kind offer Jamie thanks but no thanks, I'm going to get new ones. It's not just those anyway though it 's most urgent if I keep riding. Its the Exhaust which is going to take the time. I will be waiting on parts with bike out of action and all sorts.

I wish people would stop confusing the issue with "Fast" and "Slow" groups. They are neither. One is a progressive group with less stops. The other is a Leisurely group with more stops. Simple. In both groups you are expected to ride your own ride. I don't want anyone in the progressive group to feel pressured to follow an overtake or go faster into a bend than they are used to.
There is no pressure to join either group. If you have any doubts, don't be pressured to join the progressive group, do as Al said and join the leisurely group till lunch.
It'll be great to have an incident free ride this year
