Stripped Starter Motor. Brains required?

Post by sirch345 »

After finally getting around to stripping down a Firestorm starter motor, to replace the rusted live (+) terminal nut and bolt for one, I was also looking for a fault that had caused this starter motor not to work properly. Well it seems the insulator that sits inside the starter motor, that the terminal bolt goes through was the problem [see pictures below to show which part I mean (courtesy of firestorm996)], as it was in bits and some of it was even missing. There's also what looks like arcing on the inside of the starter motor body which shouldn't be there if the insulator was doing it's job. If that's was it is (arcing), that would explain why the engine was struggling to spin over, some of the power from the battery when you went to start the bike would have been going directly to earth.

Before I go scratching my head too much, had anyone come up with away to make something up to replace this insulator part :?: as it doesn't look like you can buy this part on it's own. I imagine it would have to be something that withstands heat to a degree, otherwise I could make one in wood

My spare was the same too and unable to hold the bolt central and away from the outer shell .
Maybe one made out of nylon

I'd better get one of those 3D model making machines then

It seems a shame to have to scrap it just for an insulator,

Carve it out nylon as suggested.

Or splash out on a Hornet starter motor for £20 which is a direct fit

or starter motor repair kit (£30)

I have no idea if plastex would be suitable, but an idea for sure
Aluminium must be conductive to a degree I would have thought, but that would have been great if it wasn't.

 I like the chopping board idea, although I doubt the missus would not notice if a bit was missing  Years ago I believe we had one of those white hard plastic things. We shouldn't have thrown it away :problem:
If you can have a word with your friend about this that would be great

Thanks for all the info Wicky, excellent  That nylon idea has got me thinking
Hardly worth spending a fortune on going by those prices for a Hornet s/motor, especially as it was only going to be a spare on stand by just in case.

Cheers for that info as well

Thanks guys, as usual you have certainly given me some more options, brilliant

I would need a piece of material for shaping in this size:-
30mm width
12mm height
8mm depth

Macdee, if you see you friend in passing great please do run it by him, but don't go out of your way to do this, as I may have a suitable piece of white nylon that I can work with.

Thanks,

Chris.

Ali is most definitely conductive, it's used widely as the cores on high voltage power cables, certainly on railway anyway

The IKEA cutting boards are perfect material for that... I use them for a bunch of things, like making end-caps on LiPO4 battery packs... Cheaper than buying it from a company stocking Nylon as material...
